We opted for a cruise and stay vacation this year, three nights at the Bellagio in Vegas and then a three night cruise to Vancouver (Home). It was a great vacation, can’t say enough about the Bellagio, but the bus ride to LA is long… 5 hours!

This is our fourth cruise and our second on Princess. The Island Princess is lovely, cannot say a bad thing about her, absolutely gorgeous, tons of glass, views from most public rooms. Our Cabin was a Mini-Suite on Dolphin Deck, D331. Great location, large balcony, totally uncovered, which you get used to.

Embarking was a breeze. We were onboard by noon. We were told our cabin was ready and for the most part it was, but were a little disappointed on opening the bathroom door and seeing it hadn’t been cleaned from the previous occupant – dirty towels on the floor, used soap beside the washbasin. We called the 5000 number provided, but it took about 3 hours to get it cleaned.

The mini suite is definitely the way to go if you can. For us, this mini cruise, it was only $30 pp difference between a Balcony and a Mini-Suite.

Food:
Horizon Court was fine, no difference from any other buffet on a cruise ship that we’ve been on.

Provence Dining Room: We had late seating and had asked for a large table. We were a little dismayed at being seated with two single mothers and four children. We don’t hate kids but were looking forward to meeting some other couples. The food was ok, nothing really to rave about as we did on our previous princess cruise (best food we had on a cruise). But the service was terrible – maybe the waiter wasn’t too happy about 4 kids being at his table either http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif. No conversation, just “What do you Want”. The lady next to me ordered a bottle of wine right at the beginning of dinner and got it half way through her Entrée after repeatedly asking for it. My husband ordered a club soda and we had to wait a good 15 minutes after we had finished dinner for his copy of the bill, when it came, it had a whole bunch of wine on it that we hadn’t ordered. We didn’t go back and also had the tips removed (I’ve never done that before).

Sabatini’s – Amazing…. We ate here on our second night and it was truly an event. They give you the menu, and you start thinking about what you’re going to order then they tell you, no worries, we’re going to bring you the whole thing anyway… and don’t worry if you can’t choose between lobster, scallops, shrimp and seabass for your entrée, because we’ll bring all of those too. For $20 per person, it was an amazing deal, and the service was impeccable.

Weather:
Not bad… it was lovely and warm in LA, lots of people by the pool. Day two was windy as hell and day three was lovely and calm seas. Saw a pod of whales from our deck as well as tons of dolphins.

My favourite Spot… Crooner’s Martini Bar… great location.. the view is wonderful and the martini’s even better. For the regular size they’re only $5 which is damn cheap. On our last day they had all the Bond Martini’s on for $3.95

Misc. – Burgers were good, mini golf was fun, but windy. Mini suites – lovely. Casino – I won $180. Bingo – Hubby won $150. Talked to one woman who had been through the canal on the ship and was staying on to Vancouver, she’d hit over $5,000 on this trip – nice J.

Embarking - nothing out of the ordinary, just lots of lines. Fabulous to take a 20 minute cab ride home!

Any questions about the Island Princess, please don’t hesitate.

Cruise Junkie, You said your balcony was UNcovered, some of us are down in D619 and were told they were covered. Do you know if the balconies change farther down the ship, or are they wrong?

As I understand all mini-suites on the dolphin deck are uncovered. We are on the Sapphire in October, on the Dolphin deck and that is uncovered. We are in D625.

John,

Sorry but you are incorrect. I had a Caribe balcony on the aft bump out and the balcony below me was definetly covered.

Scott:

You are definitely correct. We were in D414 on the Island princess and the cabin next to us, D416 was under the bump out section. It was definitely partially covered from the cabin above where we were totally uncovered. But I will say, I never felt like we were out in the open, even though it was. Always amazes me how few people actually use their balcony. Only day I really saw many people outside, other than sail a way was the morning we entered the canal. Hardly ever saw a sole out there.

I will be on the Island in December. Doesn't the Island Princess try to sit folks with more compatability together? I'll be on her for 15 nights on traditional late nite seating. Hoping to meet compatible table mates like we have on other voyages thru other lines.

Hi - the only time I saw the cruise director was on the TV http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif But he seemed ok. The staff we had for bingo and trivia were great. Sorry I can't be of more help in that area.

We were also on the Island Princess for the repositioning cruise as well as a cruise month ago. Would have liked to have seen some sun other than in LA but . . . http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Great cruise - not enough time.

Kruzin Kool - We had different CD's - Gavin is currently on there and he was great!! He was at all of the shows and his jokes were not canned! When we were on a month ago we had a CD named Trevor (I think - info is at home) and he was the only disappointment in the trip - so you will be happy to hear that he has left.

CD staff was great - same as a month ago, very involved and approachable but I do know that some of the were getting off in Vancouver.

Entertainment was great as well - Dancers and singers performed in the Welcome aboard show and Let's Rock - loved it. There was also a great male entertainer - singer who played the trumpet, his show was very entertaining, very Vegas !! Kevin Hughes - comedian on relationships and marriage - the best I have heard in a long time. He has been on the Island for quite awhile, got off in Vancouver, will have a month off and then will be on the Saphire for the next year.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

Island is doing a 7 day repo trip in 2006, with a bunch of ports along the way - San Diego (going backwards!), Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Astoria. We're booked and really looking forward to it!

I was thinking of a roll call, but it seems a little early. It would be fun to meet some We booked a PS because the difference between that & a mini was about $100 per person for 7 days. I see you're already entitled to Elite Perks, but we're not even Platinum yet, so I'm looking forward to being totally spoiled! Going back to a "regular" cabin will be so hard....:(

Yeah it is a little to early for a roll call. So should we start one tommorrow??? I could not believe the prices!!! It will definitely be very difficult to go back to a lesser cabin. :D
