For getting from Sciphol airport into the city I noted that Gray Line (http://www.etix.com/travel/servlet/onlineSale?action=viewTourDescription&route_id=7880&franchise_id=261) wants $134 for a private car transfer. Then I just came across Amsterdam taxi (http://www.amsterdam.info/transport/taxi/) (Car service) which claims to do it for $40 Euros (approx $50).

Does anyone have any experience with this company? The price is certainly right, but I wouldn't want to be suck at the airport...

Dave, I used http://www.schipholtaxi-bus.nl/ (http://www.schipholtaxi-bus.nl/) last year for a one way Schiphol to Amsterdam trip for my wife and I. They were waiting at the airport's Meeting Point on time and we had a nice trip to Rotterdam for Euro 80 so Euro 40 for a much shorter Schiphol-Amsterdam port sounds about OK. I know the regular taxis in A'dam are expensive

Dave: there are plenty of shuttles that run all the time from Schipol to Amsterdam hotels. You don't need any reservations and I think they are about$20E pp. When you clear immigrations and customs and head out to the ground transportation area, there is a desk to the left of the doors where you can obtain tickets for one of the shuttles. Tell them the name of your hotel and they will inform you which shuttle service covers that hotel. We had no problem getting shuttle in April.

Under www.schiphol.nl (http://www.schiphol.nl) then go to travelagency, and you can check what a cab and /or shuttlebus from the airport to any address will cost.
You need the zipcode of the address you are going to.

I went ahead and booked a car from these folks. Now when I book a car like this, I usually expect a guy with a five o'clock shadow, rumpled black suit and a tie that's a bit askew to be holding up a hand-lettered sign with my name misspelled. In other words, my expectations are low.

So while my wife went off to the convenience, I headed to the "Meeting point" at Schiphol where a tall, willowy blond in a very well-fitting black suit (complete with tie and cap) was holding a pre-printed sign with my name spelled correctly. I mean, this is what I'd expect James Bond's chauffeur to look like! Not only was she a wonderful sight for my weary eyes (our flight had featured 18 10-12 year old girls headed for a soccer tournament. I think they practised in the aisles all night), but she was a fantastic driver as well.

This is definitely the right way to go!

The short take is that I now have a new favorite ship, but Seattle (and HAL administration) is getting worse than ever.
On balance, though, it was a great time, one I'd do over again in a heartbeat. I will post a more complete review as soon as we finish unpacking...
:)

Dave: Welcome Back! Judging from the photos your DW took, it looks like you had great weather for your cruise. How did you like your transit of the Kiel Canal? We are looking forward to your review!

The weather was fantastic, Bill. We had one real downpour (in Ronne), ane one shower in each of Copenhagen & St. Petersburg (but we were in the car for that one). It was quite warm, and downright steamy in Copenhagen. Amsterdam was also very warm when we arrived but progressed towards 'normal' through the week.
