I want to see if I'm in correct in my thinking regarding upgrades.

I am leaving on the Zaandam this summer. I have an AA cabin, outside balcony. My relative is a travel agent who took care of doing all this booking for us, and does quite a bit of business with Holland America. She told me that she put in for an upgrade for me, I would imagine to an S suite.

I went on to the Holland America website, and noticed that there are no S suites available for my sailing date. Barring people not showing up or cancelling at the last minute, can I assume that there will be no upgrades available??? They don't hold out a suite or two for a last minute sale, do they?

I know this seems obvious, but just wondering.

Thanks

No - they do hold one or two suites for a quick last minute deal.

The year that we had to cancel a few days before our cruise, someone was very lucky to get our suite.

Lardan - There's really no for sure way to determine or predict if you'll get an upgrade or not. Certainly it helps if your TA has a good working relationship with HAL but lots of TA's have good working relationships with HAL so you're kind of competing with a group of TA's and their clients. Secondly, all the S suites may or may not be fully booked, or at least reserved, at this time and none may come available. Third, you're already in one of the higher category cabins. The higher up you are the fewer the potential upgrade situations....kind of like a pyramid in that you start to run out of space at the top. I could go on but the truth is, if there is something that could be called the true and always true answer to upgrades, that nobody can lay down the specific rules for upgrades, who goes where, who gets what, or how HAL determines any of the above.
