View Full Version : How bad is it to be in a cabin totally forward?

Thinking of booking one of the forward most mini suites on the Caribbean Princess. Will I completely regret this? Are there any redeeming qualities to being completely at the front of the ship? What would be the biggest drawbacks? Thanks!

we are booked forward on the caribe deck (c218) (sailing 7/17/04 Caribbean Princess)and the worse I could think is the walk to the back for skywalkers which won't be that bad since I'll have a drink in my hand. When I read the reviews it seems any problems had been to the aft of the ship. I think forward (exception lido deck) would be quieter.

We were in the sixth cabin from the front, not a problem, and that was forward and HIGH on lido, I don't see why anyone would describe it as "bad". Sure you felt a minor amount of movement but nothing approaching unmanagable.

We were in the frontmost outside cabin on the Sea Princess to Alaska, and had no problem with the cabin, except it was a VERY long walk anywhere you wanted to go since the closest stairwell was about 1/4 mile back!

BAD? We had Lido 209, even farther forward than srphnx (though not by much). BAD? It was wonderful. Don't worry about motion or anything else. Just enjoy your cruise! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

I was in Aloha cabin A201, forwardmost cabin on the starboard side. All I can tell you is that there was minor discomfort due to high seas and that I felt like I was being rocked to sleep everynight. I'd pick the same cabin again if I had the chance. I heard some people complain that it smelled like sewage in the rear cabins, so stick with the front, you'll get the fresh sea breeze!! ha ha

Seriously though...the Caribbean Princess is an awesome ship and I think you'll be happy in the forward mini-suite.

We have never had a problem with motion being forward..........and it is usually the quietest part of the ship as well.

i would say as long as the seas are calm you won't have a problem - i had booked my parents in a handicap room which happened to be high up and in the front of a ship several years ago. the seas were rough and you could really feel the motion there verses our cabin which was midship. in hindsight, we should have given them our cabin. not a place to put a handicap room!!

We were forwardmost on the Sun Princess last year, on the Aloha deck (so forward and high). We loved it. Yes, there is a bit of motion, but we enjoyed being so close to the pool and buffet areas (we just walked down a hallway and up a flight or two of stairs instead of waiting for an elevator or walking up LOTS of stairs), and it is very quiet...no steward carts, no people traffic, no noise of anykind. We like being either very forward or very aft for just those reasons.

I do agree with SeaMare - a lot depends on sea state. As long as the seas are relatively calm, the ride should be fine. On the other hand, in rough seas I would rather be aft than forward. The megaliners, with their shallow draft and flat bottoms, do not ride well in sea states of eight and above. Way back in Aug 02, we were on the Golden's trans-Atlantic that fought its way through two large storms, and it was very bumpy, with windows shattering on Prom deck, due to ship's flexing and twisting.

I think deck plan has a lot to do with "desireable" locations. On the Sun class and Island class, I would prefer to be somewhat forward, as it is handier to the lido buffet and the restaurants. On the Grand class, and Regal Princess, I would rather be somewhat aft, for the same reasons. I prefer to cut down on the long walks!

I just got off the Regal (much smaller ship) our cabin was forward about 5 or 6 back from the bow. The sea is bouncy between SF and Victoria...I Loved the motion. And being near the the pools and food court was great. In the Carribean we had a cabin where the waves broke off the bow of the ship it was like listening to the ocean waves break 24/7.
We love the front of the ship but if you are overly sensitive to motion get a "Relief Band" and sail midship.

We had c101 forward on the almost famous rocking and rolling Feb. 29th Golden cruise. There was some sort of high pressure weather system a long the way and the seas we very rough. Very quite with no cabin to our left and a nice walk to most places. We had some rocking and after 1 day the DW put on sea bands. I used the little know motion sickness cure called long island ice tea.

I agree with Druke. BTW if you are absolutely foward (and not every ship has cabins in this position (ie underthe bridge) - it is very windy when at sea and may find it hard to use the balcony. Just being towards the front is not problematic. On some ships depending on where ones cabin is there is the anchor to contend with,

My best friend and her husband were in a really forward cabin a few years ago when the anchor was lowered early in the morning. The cabin was very dark and the loud sounds made them jump up out of the bed and they crashed into each other. They had no idea what was going on! They used it as their wake up call the remainder of the cruise. We still laugh about it. Thank goodness it wasn't their first cruise or they wouldn't go back on a ship.

IMHO, now that I have finally cruised, the more movement the better! Puts you right to sleep every night! Forget those midship cabins, I want that rocking motion.

We were a few cabins from the front on the Diamond (D203) and had no problems at all.

Will be on the Island Princess Hawaii, Cabin A229. Any good/bad comments on this room and its location?

We had the 2nd most forward cabin on Emerald deck on the Diamond and we will ONLY book mid-ship for future cruises. DH felt motion sick most evenings and we both took motion medications for the entire week. We were in a friends cabin mid-ship on Dolphin and it barely moved at all compared to ours. If you don't mind the ships movement then you won't have a problem although it is a long hike to the stairs and elevators. Being that far forward we rarely ventured aft in the ship except to go to the buffet.

Quite a few years ago on RC Majesty of the Seas we were in a forward room. 1st nite out of Miami we had rough seas and we became aware of our room location situated somewhere above the anchor chain locker. Not much sleep that nite to to clanging and thumping of the shifting chain. After we got into calmer water we never had a problem.

I have found that there are 3 very disctinctive movements on a ship.
Forward....up and down and sometimes side to side giving a giant circular motion..AKA pitch (up and down) and roll (side to side).
Midship...mostly steady the closer to the water line your cabin is.
Aft...side to side motion and perhaps the most inconsistant and jerky....It is by far my most favorite.
Hope this helps...
To each his/her own.

I was in Emerald 102 on the Star this past October. The motion was very noticable in the rough seas we encountered around the Azores but other than that it was not bad. There was indeed a "loud enough to wake the dead" sound when the anchor was dropped in the morning but at all other times it was very quiet in the front.

in different cabins unless you can be in 2 cabins of different locations at the same time. You just don't know whether it's because of the high waves or because of your cabin location.

The only drawback is the long walk down the corridor to get to the Horizon Court, the Traditional Dining Room, and the Kids' Club. But after eating all that food, I find the long walk necessary. If you can get a good deal on those forward cabins, go for it.

We've had forward cabins before - Caribbean waters are usually pretty calm, so I wouldn't worry about the motion. The bad news - you'll fly out of bed when they drop that anchor. But the good news - you'll be the first to arrive at places!

If you hit rough weather, you're screwed basically.

You will feel serious up and down motion, unless you have the best of sea legs and a puke bucket glued to the floor by your bed.

I think the majority of motion is always, regardless of ship, stabilizers or weather, felt forward vs. aft and certainly than from mid-ship.

Keep in mind that most if not all of the most expensive cabins are almost always in the very front of the ship. Look at the layouts on just about any ship. The big bucks suites are way forward, and usually up high.

OOH! Where is the anchor located? Port or starboard? We're fairly forward (Caribe 246) on Golden. I couldn't tell on any of the Golden photos.

We were just in B230 (Baja Deck) on the Island Princess. We loved that location. It was so easy to get to the pool and horizon court. The motion wasn't bad at all. I'd take that over the back of the ship any day. We met several couples who were right up front, and they commented on how smooth it was.
