We have reservations on two Oceania cruises. One departs on the Nautica from Venice on 10/10/06 and the other from Rome on the Regetta on 5/17/07. In both cases, we are in PH1 cabins on the starboard side of the ship. We are rather inexperienced cruisers and this may be a dumb question but does it matter which side of the ship your cabin is on? Also if it does, what criteria do you use to make the choice between port and starboard side cabins?

I for one don't think it matters much on most cruises whether you are port side or starboard side.

One place I do think it matters is the Kiel Canal. I prefer to be facing West, towards the Danish border. Whether that is port or starboard depends on where the ship entered the canal. On the other hand, through the Panama Canal I think it is a coin-toss which side is better.

At sea, most of the time it doesn't matter which side.

Often, when docking, the ship has it starboard side against the pier/wharf. How the ship is docked is dependent on many different factors, and might vary from stop to stop.

Bottom line - I normally don't care which side.

For me it would also depend on which directon the ship is going..as I prefer to catch the sunsets at night.:)
On Oceania my preference is aft cabins.. best of all..but there are no PH there .only Ownersuites and A category ( I believe that is what they call them???)

We will be first time cruisers next May. I also thought about which side.

My idea is the port side, as most of the trip will be done going South on the West side of the land, or going West on the North side of hte land. This puts the land on "our" side. The starboard side would be mostly the sea side, and not as interesting.

Unless the ship sails too far from land?

Depending on where you are sailing you don't usually see much unless you are in port.
We had port side cabin and in some ports we saw the lovely country side instead of the dock area.

You can always solve the dilemma by booking a front facing or aft facing cabin!! :D

A lesson I learned from Colonel Potts in "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang:" POSH = "Port Out, Starboard Home!" :)
