View Full Version : Princess Upgrade Fairy?

http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gifI booked a balcony guarantee, but within one week the Princess website has assigned me a room. Is this final? Or subject to change because the original booking was a guarantee? Any one out there with a similar experience, please advise.

Nothing's final. Your best bet is to obsessively check the cruise personalizer at least twice per day for the next 5 months. It doesn't actually help, but it's fun. And you never know... http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

No your not the only one, I am obsessed too.

We booked a BF Guarantee and were told there would be an 80% chance of an upgrade. Our Crusie personalizer status indicated "BF" for the room for about 3 weeks, then they assigned a room, an upgrade to BB AFT.

What room did they assign you, and what Category?

After they assigned the category (BB) we were able to move to another BB room that had a larger balcony.

Good Luck. Alway check w/your TA to see if there's an upgrade.

Does the Princess Upgrade Fairy upgrade before final payment,as well as after final payment is made?

The Upgrade Fairy has visited us both before and after final payment - and once we were upgraded at the pier, upon check-in.

Just off Sun Princess' repo up the Left Coast, where we received two upgrades - and the last put us into an AC mini-suite, which was quite nice. We had booked a BD balcony originally, and had been upgraded once to a BA, and then to the AC. Sis-in-law and her hubby, who were travelling with us, were not visited by the Upgrade Fairy this trip. No accounting for it, other than just plain luck!

We booked a cateogry AD mini-suite on Diamond under a "gty" and were assigned a cabin a week or so later in catetgory AA. This was prior to final payment. After payment was made and about 1 or so months prior to cruise we were really hit with the upgrade fairy and were assigned a premium suite (ps 753) which I understand is a great aft location. So, you just never know. We are leaving next weekend and are greatly looking forward to our first full suite. I will be reporting when I get back.

Just remember, with cruising, I don't think there are any really bad cabins--it's all in the attitude and always book what you think you'll be happy with and that way no disappointments.

Thanks Michael,
We actually picked our cabin because we stayed in that one a couple of years ago when it was Renaissance, we liked the location.Although, I certainly wouldn't complain if the Upgrade Fairy sprinkled us with her "suite" dust.

http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif Hi suncat if you read this please respond. Did you originally book a guarantee? I booked a BD guarantee and within one week they assigned on the cruise personalizer a BA cabin on Carib deck. I would really prefer to be in a BA cabin on Lido deck. Should I just sit quiet and see what happens or should I say something? The cruise is still 5 months away. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Not to be too harsh or anything, but if you want a BA on Lido deck, it's best to book a BA on Lido deck. What you're really asking is, "I went for the cheaper price thinking I'd take what I got, but now I've got something other than what I REALLY wanted, so can I get the same privilege as someone who paid more?"

A guarantee means you'll get the minimum specified, nothing more. It's not a license to start making special requests. JMO, of course.

Carib Cruiser:

I hate to break it to you, but you have a great UPGRADE for what you booked. Why do you want to move from a BA on Carib (land of great balconies) to Lido?

I guess you can try calling your TA and ask to be relocated as long as you are in the same BA cat. it might work! Good Luck.

I have to agree with Spongerob - If you book a guarantee you should be happy with any upgrade or be ready to settle for no upgrade. (I'm sure you're happy) My TA indicated to us that we could book BF Guarantee and then if we were not upgraded by the time our final payment came around, we could pay the extra to get a better cabin CAT. Talk it over with your TA...

Good Luck!

Hi all,
I am fairly new to cruising. My daughter and her husband and Me and my husband have balcony rooms booked next to each other so we can open up the balcony. Is there a chance that they would still upgrade us? Not sure I would want to be upgraded since we are looking forward to having connecting balcony.

If you have been assigned a BA catagory - you can move anywhere within that catagory around the ship so long as there is a room available. You can also "down-grade" yourself to a lower cabin catagory if the location is better for you. We originally booked AE (minisuite) catagories and were given AB. We were able to then change our bookings so that the rooms were side by side - and I "downgraded" two of the rooms to AD because of the covered balconies. Princess had no problem with doing this - and we saved thousands by booking the guarantees! Also - once you are assigned a room - if you like it - you can then call and tell them you want to "lock in" that room. They will not move or upgrade you after that.

Hope this helps you!

Question! i'm new here and to Princess.

We're booked for BE#739 Aft balcony on 10/02. Haven't made final payment yet and don't have to til July 17th.

Should we have done a balcony guarantee? Does anyone know if this room's balcony is big enough for 2 lounge chairs?

Also, I've read about all of you getting Blessed by the upgrade fairy....but is she only good to those that have sailed with Princess before? Not a very good chance of her visit to the newbies?

Thanks for your info! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Pam, I don't have an answer for you about the balcony, but I can answer your question about the upgrade fairy. Our upcoming cruise is our first with Princess and the upgrade fairy visited us! We booked a specific cabin in Cat. BE and within a few weeks we were upgraded to a specific cabin in Cat. BB. Didn't seem like a huge upgrade at first until I checked the ship plans and noticed that the new cabin had a balcony that was twice as big! We're really happy with our new cabin. So, yes, the upgrade fairy likes newbies, too!

When we booked our minisuites in January - the "minisuite guarantee" (catagory AE) were 400.00pp less than the lowest "assigned" minisuites (such as booking AE711). They could have put us in ANY of the minisuites or upgraded to a full suite. I don't know if this is often done by Princess as this will be our first cruise with them - it worked out great for us! We booked 4 rooms (8 passengers) so it saved us 3200.00!

Wow!---All these cruises - and I didn't know a Guarantee booking was less than the same category booked in a specific cabin? Maybe because I always book with an agent??? The agent's rates are (usually) lower than direct w/ Princess - and I look for a TA's "group" rate - guarantee and specific cabin rate have been quoted the same --- no advantage that I see to book a guarantee if rates are the same - I book a specific cabin and leave it "Open for upgrade" - that way if I'm not upgraded - I know exactly where my cabin is located....
If Princess' rate and TA Group rate was quoted the same for you --you got a great deal!! (My next booking - I will be sure to check, thanks for the tip!) Enjoy your cruise!!!

My wife and I have booked guarantees many times. Usually save from $200-$500 per person over booking an assigned cabin in the lowest category of the guarantee. We have always been placed in a higher category than the minimum (for example, we booked a balcony guarantee for October and have been assigned a BC cabin for now). We have never been assigned a bad cabin by taking a guarantee.

We have booked an oceanview guarantee. There are no other catagories available so the ship is likely to be sold out. If we volunteer to be bumped to another date before final payment what do you think our chances would be for getting a balcony or mini-suite and shipboard credits for the same price as our original oceanview guarantee?

We were upgraded on Princess on our very first cruise many many years ago. Since then, we have spent over 125 days on their ships and have never seen the upgrade fairy again.

But to be truthful, I think it also normally has something to do with the category you book. The lower the category, the better chance of being upgraded as those cabins sell out very quickly.

I booked BF Guarantee at the suggestion of my TA. This is our first cruise and she advised we would have an 80% chance of an upgrade and if we were not upgraded by our final payment, we could pay the extra at that time and get the room we wanted, or at least a better Balacony than BF. Well, we didn't have to pay the extra, approx. 1 month after booking, we got an upgrade to BB aft on Baja B749 - larger deck - enough for two lounge chairs a table and 2 regular chairs!!

P.A. - Check with your travel agent to see if you can change to BF Guarantee and also ask if you can pay the price difference at the time of final payment if you happen to not get an upgrade. My travel agent even said: "Why pay more, when you have a great chance at an upgrade"? My TA claims to be one of Princesses top 2 agents in the country. I don't know if I believe that, but as a first time cruiser, it was pretty impressive that what she told me would happen, actually happened.

Good Luck!!!

gottocruise - Just to clarify, I checked on Travelocity and Orbitz - which are where I always start for vacation pricing - and the AE guarantees were no longer listed for my itinerary(I checked several cruise dates). Possibly those guarantee catagories are not available for every cruise. I always check several sources, including Princess and a TA to find my best price. When the guarantees were listed - they were listed with all of them (at least was my case). I seriously doubt you have missed out on anything - if that had been an option for your trip, I am sure your TA would have known and passed on that info. I would highly suggest you book a few cruises (NOW), surely one of them will offer it! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif WAIT - i just saw your upcoming cruises - WOW!! Lucky you!

never give up on the upgrade fairy. we booked a cat. ad on empress on carribbean princess for 6-5, several wks later got upgraded to a cat ab on dolphin mid-ship, and after receiving tickets with that cabin # on it we got a call from our travel agent saying we were upgraded to a ps category on lido, went on cruise personalizer to verify and sure thing there it was, can't wait. and according to princess this suite has a 42' balcony. this will be my first cruise with princess. just a note if you want to look at room L106, we were on the conquest last august in this same cabin location on lido and loved it, very secluded, quiet and wonderful.

Try again, or just post your address here and I'll check the thread later. We've been having some MAJOR issues with our ISP - e-mails have taken several days to come in, and my wife found out last night that she missed a great job opportunity because the e-mail sent to her never showed up.

We were given an amazing upgrade last year on the Grand. We booked our cruise one month prior to sailing, and we booked a mini-suite. Two days prior to sailing, we received a call from Princess saying that we had been given a complimentary upgrade to a penthouse suite. I was completely in shock...we'd never sailed with Princess before, and we paid a rock-bottom price for the mini-suite. I know that we were just incredibly lucky, and we appreciated every moment of that cruise!

We have been on two cruises, both princess. Booked mini-suite guarantees both times. The first time we went from AD to AC on the Golden, not a big deal. This time we went from an AC to AA and would up dead center on Dolphin deck - we loved it. The stories by the folks who ended up in the big suites are great - If we go again we'll always have hope :-)

In exchange for moving my cruise back 4 weeks I was upgraded from an inside stateroom to a balcony cabin and received a $500 onboard credit. I hate having to delay my cruise, but it was an offer I could not turn down.

I have never heard of an upgrade being " taken back" , this would be almost impossible for them to do since when they upgrade( or move) you out of your cabin they move someone else in to your old cabin.

Mahogg, Wow that was worth changing dates for!!! Trouble is now you'll enjoy the balcony so much you'll never want to go back to an inside. On our first Princess cruise we had booked an inside guarantee and go a balcony, and that is exactly what happened to us!!

As for being upgraded from a BC on the Caribe deck to a BA on the Lido.Well we had a BA on the LIdo , 235, and quite frankly it rocked liked crazy on the two days we had rough seas( 15 ft waves) ( This was on the Golden , eastern caribbean, in April)
I wished we had stayed with our orginal cabin which was BC , the Caribe sundecks are bigger and you are a bit lower( which is better in rough seas).

Mind you the Lido deck is quiet, and it is nice to be close to food( buffet) and pools!

I see a lot of people booking balcony or mini-suite guarantees...how about us booking the insides?? http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

I'm taking my mom on her first cruise for her Mother's Day/birthday/Christmas present, and my husband would only let me book the cheapest I could get, so all I was allowed to book was an inside JJ guarantee. I *wanted* the balcony, but I'm already in enough trouble going without him! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I shudder to what would happen if I went ahead and paid the extra $250/pp to get us the balcony.

Anyway, my question is, how long befoer the personalizer "puts" you in a room? I'm anxious to see if I'll get lucky (I know, I know, I still have 6 months!), and at least get something with some sunlight coming in.

The Personalizer showed our upgraded cabin several weeks before the cruise - 2 months at least. Inside, or outside with a balcony, you're going to love it - having a balcony is great, but most people don't spend that much time in the rooms - and the extra money can be used to do things you enjoy - or eat ice cream :-)

My problem is that I've had the balcony, and I don't want to go back. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Since paying for the room I want isn't an option, I'll be praying to the upgrade gods for the next 6 months!

Princess contacted us. But once they did we jumped on it immediatley. I know the balcony will spoil us. It's too bad our cruise has 5 ports. We aren't going to be able to spend much time on the balcony.

We are on the Aloha deck. Do the balconies have enough room to layout on? I'm hoping we can just hang out there instead of fighting for a chair up top.

I booked a BB for my trip on the Grand. This was the only category offered by my TA other than a BA. Since I have three people in my room, she said I was not eligible to book a guarentee. Any chance now of an upgrade? How are the Balcony rooms on the Aloha deck? I will be in room A419 midship unless the upgrade fairy sees fit. Will this room be covered? Will you be able to see the balcony from the Lido deck? I kind of want my privacy. A mini suite or a suite would really be nice since I have to share with two others. Are the chances likely? We are all new cruisers with Princess.

When we booked our first cruise in 2001 we opted for one of the most inexpensive inside cabins on the lowest deck possible-just to get on the ship.(Our neighbors treated us to our initial cruise in 1998 which was outside D deck with picture window-they had Aloha with balcony). We were never assigned a cabin number on the 2001 until we got to the Terminal. The baggage handler had to look at the typed list. We'd been upgraded to A-303 with a balcony.BINGO!
That was on the Golden-so I can say that most of the cabins up there are pretty big.My husband thought it was enormous. On the Grand in 2002, we booked an inside and got an inside. The balcony cabin was across the hall.We will be aboard the Caribbean Princess in Sept, and are in the JJ category-inside-408.We booked through Travelocity-so are not counting on an upgrade although this is the 4th cruise with Princess. We'll be happily surprised if we are touched by the upgrade fairy, but, again, just want to be on the ship. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif I always book with travelocity! Received an upgrade to suite on Carnival, and have already received a 3 catagory upgrade on Princess. So, let me see if I am understanding this....we booked an inside gty..gonna go all out 10 weeks later on our group cruise so we figured we would go with an inside on this one. Anyway, when I paid my final payment, they had assigned us a room, instead of leaving it as gty. Is it now locked in, or is there a chance of them upgrading us to a better room/floor in the same category? Thanks for the input.

You aren't "locked" but it does get less likely once a number is assigned, I know of some people seeing a total of 3 or more cabins by the time it is all done. However I don't see much movement after the 7 day prior mark, the cruise finalizer has done the job and not much movement comes after that.

GotaCruise,

I'm with you. I use an on-line TA that give me great rates. They are much lower than booking directly so the rate for Gty is no different than for a specific stateroom.

Your upcoming cruise to the Pacific Theater is making me drool. Have a great time.
