We want to fly into Vancouver a day early and
stay in a convenient location to the ship
and sightseeing, does anyone have a recommendation?

My Fav places to stay in Vancouver are;
the Residence Inn 1234 Hornby Street Vancouver, V6Z 1W2 BC Canada
Phone: 1 604-688-1234 Fax: 1 604-689-1762 http://marriott.com/property/propertyPage/YVRRI
It is a nice suite, especially if you get a room with a balcony.
The other spot is the Blue HOrizon Hotel,1225 Robson St., Vancouver, B.C. Canada V6E 1C3
Toll-Free (U.S.A. & Canada): 1-800-663-1333
Telephone: (604) 688-1411 Fax: (604) 688-4461 http://www.bluehorizonhotel.com/
Both are close to the shopping on Robson, a good place to go out for dinner and people watching. There are lots of tourist things nearby to see and do, and the cab ride to the ship will not cost an arm and a leg. Actually to get to the boat its about a 20minute walk all down hill, but a cab is better.
Happy sails,

I live in Vancouver now may I ask you a question.Do you wont a good hotel, nothing but the best?A middle of the road? Or a good value hotel?
I don't know anything about B&B's in the city, but I do know the hotels and locations. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Notice someone got to you before myself and I second Residence on Hornby as a Good Value Hotel. It is 15 at the most from Canada Place.Very good value indeed.
My favourite Hotel in The Wedgewood ,specialize in French Cooking. The problem is it is very expensive http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gifThat hotel is very central and 13 minutes away from the ship,no view, opposite Law Courts........but it is delightful.

My favorite hotel in Vancouver is the Pan Pacific. Its a pricey 5 star, but AWESOME! Its on top of the Canada Place cruise terminal, so you can't get any closer than that!!! Its also a great location to downtown, has views of the harbor on one side, and is pretty close to Stanley Park (all things considered).
I stayed there after my Alaska cruise and suggest that one to all!

This was posted by my sister. It is my husband our parents, my sister and two grandchildren going so I think we want something reasonable in price, convenient to the ship and convenient to do some sight seeing in the day we have prior to sailing.
Looks as though we have been given a few options already.
Thanks for the feedback.

We stayed at the Fairmont Waterfront last year. Spent one night before the cruise and 2 nights after. It is a fabulous hotel. The service is superb as were the amenities. It is expensive. Our TA got us a discounted price and it was still expensive. But we truly enjoyed it. There is a small mall under the hotel with some fast food restaurants. We had a B&B rate so our breakfasts were included.
It is directly across the street from the pier and the bellhop took our luggage across for us and when we returned, the hotel picked it up for us.
Location to get around the city is great. We walked to Stanley Park, the Gaslight district is just down the street and we took a city bus to see some other spots. We actually walked back to the hotel from Chinatown. It is a long walk but we enjoyed it. If you can, spend a few days in Vancouver. It is a beautiful city and the people are most friendly.
I hope this helps.

I would 2nd the Pan Pacific - it was so easy being on top to the ship terminal - had a beautiful room overlooking the water, watched the ship arrive (& sea planes coming/going). But the best part, the bell men at the Pan Pacific took our luggage to the cruise ship and deposited them while we had lunch and then went to the ship. They were great.

Go for The Residence on Hornby Street. At Xmas visitors from the Uk stayed there 2 adults and 2 small children had a room for the month $99 Canadian a day and the children have a free breakfast plus the restaurant downstairs is reasonable and decent food. There is a fitness centre and pool also in the building. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

We are looking for a good value hotel. Something
nice, but reasonably priced.
I have been checking out Expedia.com and saw
Century Plaza, it is rated 3 stars, has anyone
stayed there?

My husband and I cruised to Alaska last year and we stayed at the Westin Bay Shore. The hotel was wonderful and very convenient! We had a beautiful corner room (with a heavenly bed) and we watched our ship (Sun Princess) sail into port on the morning of our cruise. It was a sight we will never forget!

Hi there
About the Century, we stayed there a couple years ago and it was pretty dumpy. Unless they have a really good deal, I would suggesting moving down the road a bit. Also, There is a fine line of good and bad area of town. If I remember right it is the east side of Burrard where the neighbourhood gets a bit rougher.
I like the Hyatt right in the center of downtown but again look for a deal or pay the price.

I don't like Priceline because I like to be able to choose my hotel, but Vancouver is one city where you can use Priceline with confidence. Choose the top star rating, and the downtown area, and you will get a great hotel at a great price. A lot of people have gotten the Hyatt for a song. Downtown Vancouver is quite compact, and there are only a couple of hotels (like the Westin Bay Shore) that are not right in the middle of everything.
I've been lucky to be in Vancouver over and over again for the past few years because of my job, and it's just a wonderful city.

Look at Trip Advisor on the Web they are pretty good.
Take advise from people who actually live in the city you wont to stay in, then go to Trip Advisor.
If you wont a Budget Hotel The Hyatt,Fairmont,Westin Bayshore,Pan Pacific are all very nice plus Wedgewood which has awards from the travel magazines are all upper end.
Its up to you anyway I who have lived in this city for 34 years a local, and a reader from Victoria BC both advised you to go to The Residence.
Now its up to you to decide. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Thank you everyone, for the suggestions.
it helps alot to get input from those who
either live in the area or have stayed at
a particular hotel.
We are traveling with a 9 and 10 year old
and will have all day Sunday Sept 19th to
explore. What is close by that they would
enjoy? (Downtown area)
thanks again!

kids would enjoy the science center, and the aquarium in stanley park is wonderful. There's also the IMAX theatre at Canada Place. You might enjoy a stroll through Gas Town, or walking along Robson Street. Personally, I always enjoy a trip to the top of Harbor Centre for the amazing view. If it's a nice day, Grouse Mountain Tram is worth the trip.. Capillano Bridge is not (IMHO).
I will say again, and it has been recounted on these boards over and over again: if you want a great hotel at a good price, in Vanouver you can trust using Priceline picking top star rating in downtown.

When using priceline, do you give the price you are willing to pay and the star rating you want and if that price is OK, they accept? Would you look at the regular price of the hotel and then discount a certain % for your offer? If using, I would like my offer to be accpeted without offering too much.

Yes, you have the Priceline thing down pretty well. Go to www.biddingfortravel.com (http://www.biddingfortravel.com) and check out the message board there. Folks post what star level and what geographic area they won at X $$ so you make intelligent bids. You don't overbid or underbid and never win. Works great!

We just returned from the Barclay House at the West End. Top rating on Trip Advisor and absolutely deserves it! 100 year old beautifully restored home with terrific staff and awesome breakfast! Much better than a crowded, overpriced hotel and just off the Robson street area.

Mattinla - I looked at some of your Alaska pics - real nice - I noticed Michelle of Island Wings. DW and I have reservations for flightseeing of Misty Fjords with Michelle. How was your flight? How was the plane - I'm looking forward to a flight in a DeHavilland float plane.
Never been to Vancouver, we have resevations at the Westin Bayshore. We took a pre-cruise package that includes the hotel, a tour to Victoria and transfers. I could have done it cheaper, but this time I didn't want the hassle - only plan on one trip to Alaska - then is back to warm water!

I agree with Suzie Crusie, the Pan Pacific is a great hotel. You should ask for a room with a view of ths harbor and watch the ships arrive in the AM. If yor ship docks at the Pan Pacific dock you can't be any closer. You won't be disapointed. with the Pan Pacific. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

The Hotel Residence is Downtown. Two King sized beds in room ,free breakfasts for the kids, all for under $100 USD,run by Marriott hotels. Also fitness and pool in building, plus dining room downstairs with reasonable prices.
WE locals prefer that to Century hotel.
This is the best budget hotel from a local persons point of view. What more can I say http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I was just in Vancouver May 10th because I took the repositioning cruise on the Dawn Princess from LAX to Vancouver. Definitely try Priceline. I did for the first time and got the Marriot Pinnacle (4*) for only $48, which is $59 after taxes etc. The rate on the hotel door was $460. Very nice hotel.
Just indicate downtown Vancouver and you can't go wrong with whatever you end up getting. We walked from the Cruise Ship with our luggage to the hotel. Everything is compact and close together. We walked all over and even took a bus to Granville Island where my kids loved going to the Kids Market. Vancouver is beautiful.

I am pretty sure we are going to go with priceline. It is just too tempting. My only concern is that we are a mixed group. My sister has our parents and grandson, which the plan was to get two bed and a cot and my husband and I will have our granddaughter. My inclination at this time is to bid on three rooms. I believe we can get three rooms for less then we would pay for two rooms, if we were to book on our own and we end up in a 4* hotel. This will avoid being worried about there being two beds in each room and asking for a cot. We are going in September and from what I have read we should wait until August to offer a bid.

If you want to stay closer to the city, I loved staying at the Granville Island Hotel. It's right on Granville Island and there is a lot of touristy stuff to do right there. The main part of the city is just across the bridge.
