View Full Version : Don't rock the boat!

Just returned early this morning (1:30) from a week in AK on the Westerdam (will be gathering thoughts and sorting pictures to post this week sometime ... laundry duty and getting back into the swing of reality is first priority! ;) ) It was an awesome cruise ... the boat did move more than I thought it would. It did not bother us while on the boat whatsoever - but ... now that we have returned home we are both having trouble adjusting - we still have our sea legs about us!! We both feel rather nauseous from it - seems worse when we are (trying to) sleep and/or standing still. Any suggestions? Everything was just about perfect last week, so this is a small price to pay - I know it'll pass sooner than later but was just curious how others handled it. Thank you!:)

Give yourself a couple days - it takes time to regain your "land legs" (which is actually caused by your inner ear - maybe we should call it Land Ears! ;) )
Glad you enjoyed your cruise!

Welcome Home, look forward to hearing your review and seeing your pictures. There was a time when both DH and I would get this. For me it was the worst when I sat at my desk at work or in the shower once I was home. Our bodies must have just realized we are going to be doing a lot of cruising and have adjusted because in the past 4 or 5 cruises we no longer get this feeling. But never fear it will go away. Although you might want to try taking some Bonine motion sickness pills that could help.

Oh how I missed the rocking of the ship last night. My land legs are coming back, but it usually takes a couple of days for me to get over that feeling. I knelt down to tie my shoelace in Victoria on Saturday night and kept falling over. :)

I do great on the ship but get more "sea sick" the longer I am off the ship. It can go on for weeks! Ask your pharmisist. S/he can recommend some inexpensive pills that will lick that in a day. Starts with an M but I can not remember the name. Works for me.

Had that same probelm after my first cruise - even went to the doctor since I was feeling so badly. Just over the counter Bonnine cured it for me. It was kind of "after the cruise sea sickness"! Haven't had that problem
recently.

It's called Meclizine..It often happens if you are overtired after disembarking the ship..I sometimes take 1/2 a pill because it can make you sleepy..Just try to take it slow for a few days & be sure to get 8 hours sleep..The dizziness should subside in a couple of days....Glad you enjoyed your trip..The Westerdam is a lovely ship..

Hehe yeah the "Shore Legs" will come back. Try living on the ship during a six month deployment.....takes even longer to re adjust :D

Only in severe cases will you have prolonged "land sickness". The actual medical condition is called mal de debarquement or MDD. Since it's French for "illness or sickness of debarking" I think it's a very fitting term. :) Interestingly it affects women more often than men.

I am suffering profusely from not cruising -- with no end in sight! :(
I find that when I get home from a cruise, I feel like I'm rocking when I'm in the shower! It's more pronounced there than anywhere else.

and I thought it was just me - we left the ship on Friday and today is Tuesday and I still feel it - mostly when sitting up from lying down and in the shower!! I had an inner ear infection several years ago and it feels like that. It's a reminder of the trip!!

It hits me when I'm in the shower or standing at the sink brushing my teeth. Sadly, unless the cruise has been rougher than usual, I don't have MDD anymore.

I absolutely have had that same curious feeling that I'm still rocking with the motion of the ship once I get home. Added to that, though, it somehow seems odd that my floor at home is staying put.
Also, when I look out the windows, everything is so green, there are no waves, no sea birds, and the view doesn't change. :rolleyes
What's up with that?

I thought I was just defective! I first felt it at our first port in a giftshop and have felt it periodically since we have been off- just over a week now! I am so relieved it is not just me!:)
thanks for the info!

Hi DenNJill!!
I am still wearing a patch myself. I was sitting at my desk yesterday at work when a rogue-wave came over me and I almost fell out of my chair!!
It always takes me longer to get over the feeling, because I work in a highrise office building and the darn thing moves! We've had bad storms in Houston the past few days, and the building is swaying (however slightly) in the winds. At least my coworkers are being entertained!! I can't walk a straight line yet either!
Question: Did you watch the final 'Superstar' competition? Do you know who won?!
Have a great day! Valerie

Would a doctor prescribed cruise be tax deductible??? :D

Hmmm....treating MDD with another cruise.....sounds like a good idea to me. :D Of course one of the common treatments is valium....guess you're supposed to not care you're no longer on a cruise.
Actually while some of us suffer from short bouts of MDD after a cruise, it's no fun for folks who get the disorder and it hangs on for years and years. I'm a clinical psychologist and decided, based on this thread, to do some research through my reference material. I actually was surprised to find a couple of research studies and a number of patient case studies on MDD.

its a double blind study --that means that some pax are put on b to b cruises- some are are regular cruises and some are tied in a rocking chair which is rocked for 7 nites -- the final result is still out

We have taken 7 cruises and noticed trouble getting our land legs back after the first 3 but haven't had problems the last 4. We even commented after the last cruise on the Zaandam June 2 - 9 that we didn't have any problems whatsoever. On the first couple of cruises we even noticed that we swayed when going off the ship into ports! I think it is just a matter of getting used to cruising. Booking cruises more often to decrease the chance of land sickness sounds like a good excuse to me!

Rainbowslady - I can't walk in a straight line yet either. Am stopping by the pharmacy today to pick up OTC meds ---- this feeling is getting o-l-d!! (Some of us don't need any more of a reason to be clumsy AND spacy - )
No, we didn't watch any of the Superstar events .... it was going on way too late for us! We wimped out 6 nights out of 7 before 10:00PM!!! Of course, we were awake by 4AM enjoying the sights from our verandah.
Did you dine in the Pinnacle during the week? We did Tuesday eve and it was terrific!! Actually we thought most everything on the ship was terrific.
Once I get my pics gone through, I hope I can post a quick review along with it.
PS -- I have been watching the Houston weather --- I hope you and your family stay dry and safe!! Will keep you in my prayers! :D

I think I am over the swaying effect. No one laughed at me yesterday, so I think I'm good, finally! :p
Wicked weather..yes. Our trip home from Seattle took an extra 4 hours. San Antonio airport sitting on the tarmack isn't my idea of a good time. At least we splurged for first class seats. Coach would have been murder!
We slept in Monday morn until 7, when we found flood water within 3 inches of the doorstep. What a wakeup call. It was raining buckets. Our neighbors two houses down and across the street got 4-5 inches in their homes. We were SO lucky. The for sale sign goes up next week! For real! thanks for the prayers...a tropical storm anytime soon would sink our selling plans, quite literally.
No dining outside the DR or Lido. Couldn't justify the charge...maybe next time!
