Laptop Use on Caribbean Princess

Can someone tell me if it's possible to use a laptop in your cabin on the Caribbean Princess? If not, are you limited to the Internet cafe or is there wireless access like on some of the other ships? Any details would be appreciated! Thanks!

Here's the info we got from them in e-mail.....

The Passenger Relations Department is in receipt of your letter regarding your upcoming sailing aboard CARIBBEAN PRINCESS. Thank you for contacting our office and we appreciate the opportunity to respond.

We have noted your inquiries pertaining to internet usage while onboard. Shipboard personnel has provided the following information. While you are able to bring your own laptop and access the internet using a wireless LAN card, this is not available in passenger staterooms. This is only accessible in the Main Atrium from decks 5, 6, and 7. Further, please be advised that as per Princess Cruises' company policy, if for any reason the passenger's wireless LAN card does not pick up the network onboard (assuming that the network is available), shipboard personnel are not authorized to make any attempts to make configuration changes to a passenger's laptop. The wireless service is charged at the same price as the Internet Cafe, USD $ .35 per minute. Passengers are able to buy half hour vouchers for USD $10.50 from the Passenger Services Desk on deck 6.

Additionally, we need to advise that some internet sites are blocked due to Princess Cruises' security policy. Without knowing the site that you will be connecting to in advance, we are unable to guarantee that you will be able to connect while onboard. As you are wanting to connect to your work email account, please ensure that this is working and available before boarding the vessel. While onboard, they will only provide a "connection" to the internet. The passenger will be responsible for access to internet email.

Wow, thank you so much for that information! Now I have a dumb question. What the heck is a wireless LAN card? Is that something I can just go into Best Buy and purchase?

Yes, you can buy a wireless card. My laptop has it built in already. However, if the access price is the same I don't see the advantage of taking it. Just something else to have to keep track of.

That I am not sure about!!!! My husband is still crushed that he won't be able to have the in-cabin connection like RCI has for $100 a week. I don't want to bring it up quite yet...and get him upset all over again! I'm hoping that the wireless card that he has in his laptop now will work. It's just a wireless 802.11b PC card. It's worked fine at hotels that he's been to for business. You can get them on ebay or anywhere pretty cheap. He's a programmer and loves his job. He will want to be in contact with work..and won't enjoy our trip unless he can do some work! I think he's crazy but....he loves to program!!! I like to lay in the sun and he likes to write programs so...I guess that's only fair!!!
