All in all a good list; thanks for the link Brian. Now I'll have a few of those songs in my head until I fall asleep to them.
But the Dean Martin version of Slow Boat To China? No. There's a better version out there.

Well, I read that article in the Chron, and was very surprised that they did not include "The Last Farewell" by Roger Whittaker, a fine song about troopers sailing from the Antipodes for Europe early in WW2.
It certainly is one of my favorites.

THANKS BRIAN!
I appreciate you posting the "link" to this article. I've been trying to compile a list of "cruise" songs because I want to "burn" a CD to play on the balcony of my next cruise. Now I just have to figure out which is a good website to get the songs from and into my computer, so I can burn the CD...it's times like this that I feel technologically inept and wish I had a MUCH NEWER computer system! (Sorry...no iPODs here!)

Thanks Brian ... I really enjoyed reading the list of songs. My favorite of them all is "Beyond the Sea" by Bobby Darin.

Great list, but am I the only one old enough to remember the Sloop John B version by Bud and Travis? As much as I liked the Beach Boys, when I think of that song I think of the B and T record from the early 1960s. I would also add Sea Cruise that I remember from an old Anne Murray TV special that was taped on the Norway.

This sea cruise:
Old man rhythm is in my shoes
It's no use sittin' here cryin' the blues
So be my guest, you've got nothin' to lose
Won't you let me take you on a sea cruise?
Woo-ee, woo-ee baby
Woo-ee, woo-ee baby
Woo-ee, woo-ee baby
Won't you let me take you on a sea cruise?
I feel like jumpin', baby, won't you join me, please?
I don't like beggin', but now I'm on my bended knees
I gotta keep rockin', mama, I ain't lyin'
My heart is beatin' rhythm and it's right on time
So be my guest, you've got nothin' to lose
Won't you let me take you on a sea cruise?
Woo-ee, woo-ee baby
Woo-ee, woo-ee baby
Woo-ee, woo-ee baby
Won't you let me take you on a sea cruise?
I feel like jumpin', baby, won't you join me, please?
I don't like beggin', but now I'm on my bended knees
I gotta keep a-rockin', get my hat off the rack
I gotta boogie-woogie like a knife's in my back
So be my guest, you've got nothin' to lose
Won't you let me take you on a sea cruise?
Woo-ee, woo-ee baby
Woo-ee, woo-ee baby
Woo-ee, woo-ee baby

Great list! Thanks for posting.
Christopher Cross' Sailing was my high school sweetheart's & my "song." At one time he even wrote his own lyrics for me. Awwwww. Go ahead, get sick. It's OK.
Wasn't there a song about about a boat "The Edmund Fitzgerald" - oh wait, she sank, didn't she?

Love Cruises...
My favorite of them all is "Beyond the Sea" by Bobby Darin. Which ends with, "And never again I'll go sailing." I sang, "Slow Boat To China" during Pax Talent Night on the old Rotterdam and my mother said, "Don't quit your day job."

Yeah, in Lake Superior in the 1970's. :(
BTW, it was Gordon Lightfoot that sang that song about the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Good topic/link Brian. Nobody has mentioned sea shanties. Musicology anyone? These were songs of the day, some dating back hundreds of years. I did a quick web search, and here is a good page:

Being an old dead head, I always liked "Go to sea no More". Where are the "drunkin sailors" on this board?:)

I want to submit "Southern Cross" by Crosby, Stills & Nash:
Got out of town on a boat go'n' to southern islands,
Sailing a reach before a following sea...etc.
This is one of those songs that gives me little goose bumps whenever it comes on the radio.
