if we don't want to eat in the main dining room one night do we have to go to the buffet restaurant at a certain time (same as our dining room time?) or can we go at anytime? Also, are breakfast and lunch times in the main dining room also assigned or just dinner seatings?

You can go to the buffet any time your heart desires!!

Jen... If you don't want to go to the dining room, you are free to go to the buffet whenever you chose to. It's always there for the taking, however I do think that they have certain hours for specific meals but these are quite long so you have a very wide window of opportunity to be fed!
Yes, they do have set hours for breakfast and lunch but again there is always the buffet. The seating in the dining room is only assigned for dinnerand for the other meals it is more like a "real" restaurant- you are seated when you get there at whatever table is available.
Hope this helps.

Hi Jen,
We tend to eat our breakfast and lunch in a more "informal" fashion whenever we choose and avoid the dining room for those meals. Dinner, we usually eat in the dining room for the experience and the selection.

Not sure if this is still the case with Carnival, but it was one of the things I enjoy most about them. When going to breakfast/lunch in the dining room, we would alway sit at our regular dinner table as opposed to open seating. If we were meeting friends, they would always know where to find us. You would still have a time for those meals though, but could arrive at any time during that window. On Princess, we would be seated anywhere in the dining room for breakfast/lunch. If we wanted to sit with our regular dining mates, we would have to agree upon a time to meet and wait for them before being seated!! A real pain. Since I haven't been on Carnival in over a year, I'm hoping that this regular table seating for the other meals is still the case. Any one know?

Baby, I guess this varies from ship to ship. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif My last three cruises on the Holiday - I had all three meals every day in the dining room.
When I walked in for breakfast or lunch, my waiter was waving at me to come to "my assigned table". (At times, I've been the only person at that table for breakfast and lunch. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif) Only on port days and debarkation day did I sit at a different table.
No biggie, just thought I'd add that some ships do things differently. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The correct answer is: "It depends."
Lunch in the dining room on port days is typically "open" seating, that seems to be the only consistent policy across all ships in the fleet.

Anyone know what the policy is on the destiny? Is it open seating for breakfast and lunch or is it assigned?

Since this two year old thread has been brought back to life, I have to change my reply.:D B'fast and lunch in the dining room is now NOT like it was before. The waiter will seat you at the first available table. I prefer it like it was - assigned seating no matter which meal.
Don't know about Destiny. That ship does so many things differently from any other Carnival ship.
