Ive stayed 10 days on St John. Ive been to some of the best snorkeling areas there are in those waters. My question is how good is the snorkeling trips from carnival for someone like myself who really wants great coral reefs. Has anyone hired pvt boat and captain to take them to the reefs that are less populated with people. Has anyone used Shoretrips.com or has a recommendation.
This is my very first cruise..any suggestions for St Thomas/St John & Tortola would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It sounds like you should go it on your own. The ships DO offer excursions targeting snorklers of varying experience but it sounds to me like you might be bored.
Our cruise last month called in St Thomas but we took the ferry to St John then a cab to Trunk Bay and the National Park where we found lots of snorklers, on their own, all over the place.
I think if you just did some research here you could probably find all the information you need to book your own.
Happy Cruising

Go to the Ports of Call boards and read there and you will get alot of info about private charters.

Over the last 5 years I have booked a private yacht charter with Captain Steve who owns the Nightwind. He takes you for the day and makes great stops , great food and drink. Private and personal....check out website www.beachtops.com (http://www.beachtops.com)

Hi Marge,
I wanted to highly recommend Capt Pat and the Ike Witt. It is a six pack (six people max) excursion out of St Thomas. We cruised on the Explorer of the Seas, RCCL, two weeks ago and sailed with him when we got to St Thomas. It was fabulous. After being on a big boat, it was nice to get on a sailboat and just cruise around leisurely. He took us to beautiful snokeling sites and showed us all around St John and St James. He prepared a wonderful chicken ceasar salad for lunch and a fresh fruit plate before we snorkeled in the morning. And of course there were free drinks all day. He will bring you back early if you want to get a little shopping in on St Thomas before you leave port. It's really just what ever your group wants to do. I will be happy to answer any other questions for you and you can view my pictures of that day at http://groups.msn.com/ExplorerCruise2004/shoebox.msnw
If you can't open the link, you can email me at shannon_e@msn.com and I will send it to you that way. I'm sorry but you will have to look at all of the pictures to find the ones of us with Capt Pat! He is a real character and we felt like we made a new friend at the end of the day!
Good luck,
Shannon
