If you have been on this excursion, I'd love to know what you thought about it. The roll call for our August 27th Insignia Med sailing is not very active so private tour may not be an option, and we're considering this shore ex from Marseille.
Thanks in advance,
Donna

Hi, Two years ago we went our own to Avignon. There is an VERY fast train TGV that takes about one hour to get to Avignon and, at the time, train left Marseille at around 9:00 am and departed Avignon at around 4:00 pm. The TGV train station is outside of Avignon but there is a free shuttle that drops you off at the "old" station and its about a 10 minute walk to the Palace (or grab a taxi). The audio guides (tape recorders) for the Palace are the best we have ever encountered. The great advantage of doing a self tour is that you can spend as much or as little time in each of the rooms as u wish.
For us the day spent in Avignon was one the highlights of our european cruise.

Thank you for leaving this information for us, and I appreciate your insight regarding the palace audio tour. We were hoping to go back to Les Baux in the same day, but this is definitely another option.
Have a great next trip,
Donna

We did a private tour with two other couples about a year ago with Catherine. We did both Avignon and Les Baux as well as St. Remy de Provence in one day. We had adequate time at the Palace of the Popes and had a late lunch in St. Remy. The previous poster is correct the audio guides were quite helpful. Here is Catherine's contact information if you are interested.

Our May, 06 Marseille port-o-call found us getting our own private driver/guide and spent the day at a fantastic French seaside fishing village of Cassis. It has mucho harbor-side
cafe's w/outside tables to sit and people watch for hours. The many side streets off the main area are filled with great small shops featureing sweets'n treats and many other items. There are even small tour boats that go out for 1 or 2 hrs to some local fjord's(sp). All in all it's a most relaxing day(and you'll need the rest). We liked it and you might give it some consideration as an alternative.

Nas-Karr, Did you make prior arrangements for Cassis or pick up a guide (taxi ?) at the pier? Thanks for any info regarding this visit to Cassis, sounds like a nice alternative as we have been to Avignon on a previous trip.
