What to do in FLL for the day?

Any suggestions as to what we could do for the day in FLL(after getting off ship in AM) before a 5:00pm flight?

HAL has lots of Ft. Lauderdale excusions on their website at this location:

But you could also rent a car for the day and do your own thing. We've done this. We caught the Budget pick-up van right outside of the port building (we didn't call them first-- they just happened to be there, but you might want to call if they're not), and they took us to a rental office in a small shopping center (Quay Shopping Plaza) right near the port. Not sure how much it will cost now, but 2 years ago it cost us something like $35-$40. It was convenient to do what we wanted and have a place to stash our luggage.

As for what to do, we went to the beach area in Ft. Lauderdale. We browsed around in a lovely shopping complex directly across from the beach (I think it was called Beach Place), ate lunch at a nice open-air restaurant there, and walked around a bit on the beach. We also drove around a little, checking out the gorgeous homes right on the water and admiring how lovely it all was.

There are lots of other things to see, too. You could walk around Las Olas Blvd. and see how the other half lives (or rather, shops!), and there's also the Riverwalk area http://www.goriverwalk.com/, but that's primarily nightlife stuff. There's also the Sawgrass Mills shopping outlet mall http://www.sawgrassmills.com, if you still have some room left in your luggage.

Last September after getting of the Zuiderdam we went to the Everglades not too far from the airport. We really enjoyed ourselves and had plenty of time to catch our plane. We rented a car at the airport.

An inexpensive ($10) way to pass the time in FLL. Sightsee, shop, eat etc. and get on and off whenecer you choose.

Have done the airboat ride through the Everglades - really great!!

We enjoyed taking the "cruise" on the intercoastal waterway or whatever it is called. You see a side of Ft. Lauderdale you'd not otherwise see as well some beautiful homes.

I too am a fan of the water taxi. You can catch it at the Marriott, not too far from the FLL port. It's cheap and you can hop on and off all day, have a nice lunch, shop, hit the beach or just sit back and watch it all go by.

Perhaps someone knows how long you could keep your luggage at the port so that you do not have to drag it around with you all day.
