We just got off a 10-day aboard the Noordam and there were two formal nights, one informal night, one informal/formal optional night, and the rest were casual.

Great! So because I'm on an 11 night I have 3 formal nights and who knows how many semi-formals...

They're called informals, not semi-formals, and (at least to some people) that does make a difference in what they wear. For a man (at least in my mind) semi-formal means a suit and tie while informal means a jacket & slacks. :)

The number of informal nights on a cruise can vary from cruise to cruise based on # of at-sea days, times in port, or the whims of the hotel manager. Generally, though, there'll be no more (and usually fewer) informal nights than formal nights.

Aloha - Right now Noordam is in the Mediterranean doing a very port-intensive itinerary. That may be the reason for fewer formal nights.

Your cruise in December is in the Caribbean, right? I think you'll have 3 formal nights & at least 2 informals. That's what we had on the 10-day inaugural this past February. John & I are doing the 11-day itinerary in January & I'm planning on the same.

Cruise docs will tell you exactly how many of each you will have, but not which nights they will be. Sure wish they did. I like to plan, but then I realize I don't need to overplan, I'm on vacation. :) Why do I need to know before I go if on Tuesday it's formal night?

Well, I knew that there would be 3 formal nights as I spoke with Ship's Services (when reserving the Pinnacle Grill). Our formal nights will be the 17th 22nd and 24 or 25 (can't remember the last one) I think it's Christmas.

I just was not aware that we would also have to dress up for a few "informals" too. Ah well, as is the life of being a Cruiser :D

Take that with a grain of salt as the actual number and dates of formal nights (and other dress) won't be finalized until you actually sail...

Just plan your wardrobe accordingly and don't sweat the details.

Usually the formals are either at-sea days or days with relatively early port departures. I've never gone to the trouble of pegging dates, as things are subject to change.

I love playing dress-up and cruises offer such a fabulous opportunity to indulge.

Dave, I wish ALL cruise lines would change the term from "informal" to "semi-formal". The word "semi-formal" connotes a higher standard of dress than does "informal."

I believe that many new or under-informed cruisers consider "informal" to be very close to "casual."

Well, yes - that was my point. Semi-formal means suit&tie for men, which isn't what HAL means by "informal".
