Help! 1st time cruisers here, and I need info on the Mayan ruins choices at Progresso. We'd love to see Chichen Itza, but I have a 13 and 15 y/o and I'm wondering if we might have more fun at the Dzibilchatun tour. Do they serve lunch there or do you eat on your own? What is there to do after the tour in Progresso? Any good shopping? Are there good tour guides at Dzibilchatun. Would we be dissapointed in the ruins or are they impressive. Thanks! Leaving in May, can't wait!

Hey, welcome to Cruisecritic, MrsNeurotic! I love your screenname...LOL!!!
As for your question, I have toured both places you speak of---the ruins are much larger and more impressive in Chichen, but the bus ride (though air conditioned and lunch is served once you get to the site) is about 1 1/2 hours one way....still, I would not miss them if I were you.
Dzibilchaltun is only a short ride, the tourguides are great, and there is some shopping time available. Yes, lunch is part of it (at least when you attend Mexican Rodeo also, which is the package we took), too. The ruins at the latter are far fewrer, but nice also-------you wouldn't be disappointed I don't think. Still, if the kids don't mind the long trip, I'd choose the first one, especially if you won't get another chance to view Mayan ruins. HTH!

The bus ride is just 1 1/2 hours each way? I think I thought it would be longer. I'll probably stick with CI, my kids travel well. Hopefully, we'll go back, but who knows! Thanx!

I have not been to Dzibilchatun but have been to Progresso and Chichen Itza. Chichen Itza is awesome. Very worth going out of your way to see. One warning: It will be unbearably hot at Chichen Itza in May. Wear lots of sun screen and drink tons of water. Chichen Itza is in the interior of the Yucatan Penninsula and gets no ocean breezes or anything else to cool the place down.

I highly recommend Chichen-Itza! It is awesome! The bus ride is over 2 hours but it is air conditioned and comfortable. The bus stops at a small shopping area before you get to the ruins and you can bargain for Mexican heritage and folklore items. You will get a bag lunch of a sandwich, chips, juice, cookie, etc. It is extremely hot there as the previous poster has mentioned. You can buy cold water at the ruins.I was not thrilled about taking this excursion but was VERY happy that we did in the end.You will be amazed at what all you see!
