I am throwing this post out to all who have been on the Westerdam recently.

My cruise isn't until OCT 15 but I just have to know......lol What is the SHOPPING like onboard? ;)

Thanks in advance

Michelle

Shopping is pretty nice - they have a very nice jewelry section, gold by the inch, liquor tasting with great prices, the actual shop carries everything from clothes to post cards - they had some gorgeous globes when we were on. Lots of DAM items. This shop was pretty big compared to the one on the Zaandam.

Enjoy shopping!

THANK YOU. Not sure if I can go 7 days without shopping on board. As the DH says, she ain't happy unless she is spending money. :D

Another question off topic, is it true that HAL gives out canvas tote bags to all the pasengers? Or is this just for past cruisers?

Yes, there is a nice canvas tote bag that you get the night before the first port. It is 1 per cabin, not 1 per person. Although, when we had our son in our cabin on the Zaandam, we did get 2 tote bags.

If you would like to see menus and pictures of the Westerdam, click on the link below.

WindyCity; oooooo, I am so excited and can barely wait. I can always use a new tote for work...lol :D

Funny thing is, I already saw your menus awhile back. ;)

Thanks for your reply. Much appreciated.

Was just aboard up until this morning. I bought the standard logo items (i.e. t-shirts, etc.) but my table mates (female) enjoyed shopping for jewelry, watches, etc.

Windy City:

Your pictures are great! We are sailing on the Westerdam 10/29/06. We got a balony guarantee, and have not yet been assigned a cabin number. the suspense is killing me. Our final payment is due next week. Maybe then, we will find out where they are putting us! We too, are staying at the Renaissance hotel. Looks like a really nice place. We were fortunate to get that location on Hotwire, as this weekend is the International boat show in FLL, (which I didn't know when we booked), and almost everything is sold out. Plus, we saved lots of $$$ by using Hotwire, and got a great hotel!

The shops were large and stocked with a variety of items. I will say two things.......... 1) the shops were the ONLY place onboard the whole trip that seemed crowded. 2) the staff in the shops were the least gracious of any on the ship. They often seemed bothered to offer any help. The cashier never seemed to know anything about any specials or sales advertised in the daily program, and offered no assistance whatsoever to direct us to someone who did.

I hated to post a negative, and actually the shops were the only negative aspect of our entire trip onboard.

On the other hand, the Westerdam is a lovely ship. In all the other areas we never felt we were in a crowd. It had so many places to just find a quiet spot to watch the beautiful scenery or chat or read.

For purr 30...
Thanks for asking this question...I might have already asked it a back in March of 2005 when I first started my research for "our" cruise...but I can't remember if I did (and the "search" feature of Cruise Critic seems to be out-of-order most of the time). DH is a ship memorabilia collector and will be very happy to hear that there are lots of logo or "DAM" merchandise items for him to "add" to his collection!

Does anyone know if there is a model of the WESTERDAM that can be purchased in one of the shops and the approximate cost (if there is one)?
