I'm curious about the breakdown of American and European passengers. We are on the Oct 22 Rotterdam cruise from Athens to Lisbon. Should I expect mostly Americans? Or mostly non-Americans? Thanks!

On HAL, you will have primarily Americans followed by Canadians.

We have been on a number of European cruises with HAL and the majority of passengers were U.S. citizens, followed by Canadians, usually you will find a few Australians and New Zealanders and South Africans. We have also been with Dutch people as well.

From my experience I would have to agree. Mostly North Americans.

We were on Westerdam in the Med during its first season. There were more US passport holders than any other nation.

BUT, slightly MORE than half the passengers were non-US passport holders from 37 nations. Canadians and British were the leading non-US passengers.

Because this cruise was Venice to Venice, it attracted a lot of Europeans, as well passengers from Japan, Australia, New Zealand and other countries.

I liked having so many nations represented and we met a lot of very nice people from other countries.

Every cruise will be different, but cruises that start and end in Europe will generally have a more diverse manifest than Caribbbean or Alaska voyages.

We were on the Rotterdam from Venice to Lisbon last year - much the same itinerary as yours. It was mostly Americans with a lot of Canadians and then some Australians and others. Everyone was English speaking. It was a great bunch of people.

You'll have a great time on this trip. We liked it so much that we are going back this year. We will be on the sailing before you Ancient Wonders - the Eastern Med and Black Sea. Will try to leave everything in good condition for you.;)

cheers

If it helps we have done 2 Med cruises lately

1 with Princess mainy American passengers
1 with P & O mostly UK passengers

Perhaps the shipping Company rather than the itinerary dictates the origin of the passengers

I think that is true. We sailed in the Med on Costa, and there were only 22 English speaking pax on board and 12 of them were with us! It was awful trying to hear the announcements as they were first in Italian, then French, German and Spanish before they got to English and by then everyone was chatting in their language and we couldn`t hear anything. When I cruise the Med again, it will definitely be on an American ship........jean:cool:

Med cruises are very hectic , last one we did was

On board day 1 Barcelona overnight
sld day 2
day 3 ok tender into Monte Carlo
day 4 up early to get to Pisa from Livorno about 7.00 am
day 5 up very early to get to Rome from Civicivatia about 5 am
day 6 up very early to go to Capri/Sorrento/Pompei about 5 am
day 7 at last a day at sea
day 8 nice and easy docked in centre of Rhodes
day 9 at sea
day 10 nice and easy again centre of Kussadasi
2 days at sea
13 dya overnight in Venice

by the time we had the first day at sea everyone was exhausted as this is the type of cruise with an itinerary that you have a list of must see places

I would suggest anyone doing the Med go in this direction and not in reverse as you will not catch up on the exhausting schedule around Livorno / Civvicivatia and Florence.

But do go the sights are wonderful !!

Thanks for all the great info! My husband has been trying to learn Spanish, Italian and Japanese (he's already fluent in English and French), and he's hoping to get in some practice with other passengers before trying his skills on the local merchants in port.

Me - I know American English and I'm getting pretty good at British English. I can ask for directions to the bathroom in Spanish and French.

That's always the first thing I learn!:)

Add Italian: Dove banyo?
And Japanese: Binjo doku-deska?
British English: Where's the loo?
American English: Where's the can?:p

Med cruising is great as there is so much to see.

The only problem is you need a Caribbean cruise afterwards because you are exhausted from all the fantastic sight seeing.

They can be very port intensive. And not for laying on the beach, more for historical buildings etc.

Any excuse for another cruise.
