 I Will be touring Rome and many more places that I thought I would never see this Nov. 15th on the Nautica. This will be my first cruise and I hope to take many many pictures. My question is, Does the Nautica allow us to use their computors to down load digital pictures to CD's? If so, what do I need to bring with me, and is there a cost. Thanks much for your help!

When we were on the Nautica in June, you could download dig pics to the server and they would burn a cd for you for $15 a CD. The had a universal card reader that would accept most cards.

When we sailed on Insignia, I downloaded my photos every day in the ship's computer lab and sorted them into folders by city. The staff was extremely helpful. As Nparmelee said, at the end of the trip they burned a photo CD for me for $15. Also, since I took two photo-editing classes while on board (at a very reasonable cost) I was able to use their Adobe Photoshop program to "touch-up" some of my photo mistakes!
Looking forward to our next cruise on Regatta -- May 17, 2007, Rome to Stockholm!

Thanks very much for the info! I was hoping that they would have this service:)

We brought an external hard drive with us on Insigina and for a one time $10 charge, we could use their computer and card reader to download the photos off the memory cards. You could also use a couple of thumb drives.
And once you have your account set-up....you can use the computer lab or one of the two computers up in the library. We would grab a glass of wine and run up to the library to download the photos we took that day.
One suggestion...make sure you bring extra batteries and memory cards. We found that we took alot more photos on our trip than we normally do....several shots of the same thing.....that way we could edit and delete to get the best photo.

Not exactly on topic, when we were on the Baltic's cruise we brought a new digital camera, anyway I had only one memory card with me(dumb)the ship photographer kept downloading the pics onto a cd for me. That way I could delete from the memory card and continue using it. At the end of the cruise I had over 300 photo's on the cd. More on the memory card. Anyway, I have chosen the pic's I want printed, want to do this at the photo shop, can I delete the unwanted photo's from the cd? Or are they permanent? I know I can delete from my computer but what about the cd itself? Thanks for your help Trying to make this easy. I am deleting way over 100 photo's

Lara, NO you can't delete your pics from a CD unless it is a CD-RW which I doubt that it is. You have two choices:
1) Download the pics to a computer into a file, say, "My Trip Pics". Then go to this file, view your pics, delete any you don't want, then burn the rest back to a new CD. Now, you'll have just the ones you want.
2) From the CD you have, look at your pics with a Computer (or sometimes a "reader" in a photo shop). Pick the ones you want to print and make a list of their file names, then tell the photo shop operator that these are the only ones you want printed. Most folks are reasonable about this.
Hope this is of some help. I take it you're not a computer geek so you may need to rely on a son, daughter, or good friend.. ;)

You can't delete photos from a CD. You can, however, using your computer, or at the photoshop, burn a new CD.
Certainly not dumb to have only one memory card; yours was just too small. A 512 MB card would hold about 350 high quality images.
When traveling I delete unwanted/duplicate pictures on a daily basis using my camera when I don't have access to a computer. On the ship, I plan to download the pictures, via the ship's computer, either to my portable disk drive or the ship's computer (to burn a CD at the end of the cruise). But I will not delete the camera's memory chip. I only want a backup set of pictures in case of a catastrophic camera failure or loss. As they say: digital camera $500, Oceania cruise (2 for one+free airfare) $8000, pictures of the cruise: priceless!

I can't stress the importance of bringing an extra memory card or two, considering the cost of the card ($25-50) compared to the cost of the cruise! I brought two 1GB cards for my camera - halfway through one of them, it shorted out - while passing through the Dardanelles!!!! Fortunately, I had a 512MB for backup, but you'd hate to miss any photo ops because you didn't bring enough memory. And buying the memory cards on board isn't cheap - one woman complained that hers cost nearly $100, when she could have bought one at Costco for a quarter of that price. But where is she going to find a Costco in the middle of the Black Sea?!?

Take your own CDs with you. You can buy them for about $1 a piece and can burn your own pictures to your own CD's at the computer lab or library and save the $15 they charge.

After reading this article (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2004-05-05-disc-rot_x.htm), I decided it was better to keep my photos on an encapsulated memory card than on a CD, especially if I was going to be travelling with it. A memory stick would work just as well, I suppose,
However, just make sure that whatever storage media you use, it isn't going to be outpaced by technology in five years -- how many of you have documents stored on 5.25" or even 3.5" diskettes that can't be read by your present-day computer? :p

I read or was told that there is a charge if you bring your own CDs. Think you have to sign up for computer use (hours are expensive).
I was going to bring 15 CDs and laptop but decided it was too much trouble and probably all our pix would go on one or 2 CDs.

In order to burn your own CDs on the ship, does it matter whether the CDs are +R or -R? I want to be sure to bring the right ones.

Lynn,
CD's come in CD-R and CD-RW. The CD-R can be written to only once. The CD-RW can be "re-written" to a number of times.
Your best bet is to take several CD-R disks. They are slightly more dependable and a bit less expensive.
It's the DVDs that come in +R, -R, +RW, and -RW. These hold significantly more data, are more expensive, and the ship's computers may not be able to burn a DVD. The difference between the + and the - is the way the DVDs are formatted - which doesn't mean that we have to do anything special. It's just a technical fight between the two different Tech camps.
Too much information (TMI) ???
I tried, Marv :)

Your info was very helpful. It was not TMI at all. I am planning on taking 6 CDs because my camera is 7.1 mp and I take a lot of pix. I have 2 1 gig memory cards and a jump drive that I am taking. Should be more than enough. I figured I'd take extra CDs in case someone else might need it.

GOOD plan... You're thoughtful..
I'm taking CDs as well AND I'm taking my own LapTop so I can delete, crop, and edit each evening... It beats drinking (so my wife tells me).

so if I take my own CDs can I download for free and not pay the $15?
just wondering if the fee is for the CD or the download?

No, if you take your own CDs and burn them in the computer lab, they charge you $15. anyway. Here's how to avoid that. Take a flash drive (jump drive) and download your pix onto that in the library. That is free. When you get home, you can make your own CD. For me, it wasn't the $15. so much as the "nickel and diming", so I worked around it. Of course, if you are taking your laptop, you can burn your CDs on that. I just think it is "lighter" to take a big memory flash drive than shlepping a laptop that could get ruined.
Have a great cruise - Oceania is awesome!!!!

Don't forget to take a spare battery and your charger especially if you are using a special battery pack (not standard AA batteries). Nothing more annoying than having your camera die on you half way during a day's excursion.

Just returned from the Nautica. I too had the intention of downloading my pix onto the Nautica server, edit them and save to CD at the end for $US15. Then I thought of using a 1Gb memory stick (to save more pix than a CD would hold) The cost of doing that was $US10. I didn't think about the idea of going to the library and downloading to my memory stick there. I had 2 1GB memory cards for my camera. I filled one and used half the other and brought both home because I had better things to do on the ship than spend hours at a computer editing and doctoring my images.

I have been told and agree it is better to have several small memory sticks/compact flash, etc. and change them every few days like old fashioned film. Keep the used ones in the room safe, not with the camera. That way if the camera is lost or stolen you will still have most of your pictures. On our last two week cruise we used four "cards". We especially started a new one at our stop in Gibraltar as we had heard stories of the apes taking/smashing cameras, etc. Luckily it did not happen. However, two people on our cruise left their bags/backpacks on tour buses and neither got their cameras back.
Considering the price of a cruise, a few dollars spent on memory is well worth it.
