Question: Do you mean shorts for dining (you said late evening) while ashore at Barbados and Aruba? Or do you mean in the dining room those nights?
Shorts are not permitted ANY night in the dining room (except possibly first night if you don't have your luggage).
Also, I've always had my assigned table the first night on board.

Correction, there are some nights on certain cruises that one "can" wear shorts in the dining room. I have been on several Carnival sailings where shorts were permitted when the ship was in port very late. It clearly stated this in the Capers.

Really ??!! Never heard of that, and have certainly never seen it. On my last cruise, we were in Cozumel till midnight, but there weren't any shorts in the dining room at dinner. (Not mentioned in Capers, either.)

You are incorrect. Shorts are sometimes permitted in the dining room when the ship is in port late into the evening (during the dinner hours).
To answer the original poster's question - yes, shorts are permitted for the nights that you are docked in Barbados and Aruba. That information will be confirmed in your daily capers for those days.

I have to agree with Cotton. I've always had my assigned table in the dining room for the first night, even when departing from San Juan. And there has never been an allowance for shorts at dinner due to a late port call, with the exception of the first night being due to luggage not being delivered yet.

I just got off the Carnival Pride, and although each day the Capers clearly states that shorts are not permitted in the dining room, we did see a man in khakhi (docker-type) shorts on about the 4th night in the dining room. I was very surprised. There was also a sign at the door of the dining room stating to please wear proper attire into the dining room. On one formal night, there was a man dressed in jeans and a sports jersey (with a number on it). He seemed happy as a clam, and he wasn't asked to leave. Go figure.

We were in Cozumel until 10 or 11 pm and shorts were not permitted in the dining room that day. Further more, one night when my husband forgot to change into trousers the maitre 'd very politely asked to go back to our cabin to change. I guess each ship is a little different when it comes to enforcement.

We were on the Glory in February and both formal nights a lady sitting behind us was wearing sweats. I think, especially on formal nights, if you want to dress that way that is fine, but don't come to the dining room.
But, until Carnival decides to enforce the dress code (policy) you are going to see that kind of thing.

We've seen this notation in the Capers on at least two of our Carnival cruises (Triumph 2001 and Victory 2003) that were in Cozumel until midnight.

Shorts in the dining room! Who Hoo! Do you think I could just slip in with my swim trunks and beach towel around my neck? After all they're shorts of a sort and the directions don't say anything about needing a shirt! I'll be sure and wear my dress flip flops on formal night- LMAO!!!!

Jason - I see that you are sailing on the Destiny in May. You should check your capers for the days that you are in Barbados and Aruba and see if it says that shorts are allowed on those evenings at dinner. It said it was allowed when I sailed the Destiny in 2002....... http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

We cruised the Western Triumph March 20th and in the Carnival Capers it states:
Saturday, March 20th, "Dress Code Tonight: Casual, No Shorts or tank tops allowed
Sunday, March 21st, Day At Sea, Dress Code: Formal Attire
Monday, March 22nd when we were in Cozumel, Mexico from 7:30am - 12 midnite it says "Open Seating Dinner Dress For the Evening: Casual - shorts permitted"
Tuesday, March 23rd, Day At Sea, Dress for Evening: Casual
Wednesday, March 24th, Grand Cayman 7:30am-4:30pm, Dinner Dress: Casual, No Shorts or T-Shirts Please
Thursday, March 25th, Ochos Rios, Jamaica 8:00am-3:30pm Dinner - Dress for Evening FORMAL
Friday, March 26th, Day At Sea Dinner Dress: Casual
So only one night did it actually say shorts permitted....
Hope this helps...
