I am cruising from New York for a weekend cruise. Looking to take Amtrak or Greyhound since we want to stay in Washington DC a few days before.
My question is---how far is Penn Station from the pier? Does any one know the cost of a cab?

Any help or suggestions you may have will be greatly appreciated. THANKS>

Penn Station is about 10 block from the pier and they are long, new york blocks. i don't know exactly how much a cab would be but my guess would be approx $15.00 - $20.00 as we paid $7.00 to go only about 3-1/2 blocks to our hotel from Penn Station

When you call Amtrak, tell them you are sailing on Carnival. They offer a discount. We saved over $30 per person with the promotion.

Just don't take the Ascela (I don't know how you spell it) - the expensive extra train Amtrak has. It is so NOT worth the $$ from DC to NY. Penn Station is in walking distance for the pier (by NYC standards) but not with luggage. I doubt it would be more than $20 even w/ luggage unless there was a hideous traffic snarl.

It's about 2 miles to the pier. You get on at 32nd street going west or on 8 avenue going north. You need to go up to 59th street and go west- hopefully the cab driver will know since this does not follow the signs(most of the time if you accross 55th street where the signs are-the 55th street entrance is closed) . its $2.00 to start(going up in May) and about $1.50 a mile with waiting it should be no more than $8.00 on the meter(and about 25% higher after the increase). At least a 15-20% tip. If traffic is really bad it could be higher. Its .30 for every 60 seconds extra when not moving I believe.

On a weekend morning the traffic should not be that bad.

Thanks for all your help. Including asking for that discount. I think Amtrak is the way for us to go.
