I thought this was a typo, but it has been present all day. On our pending cruise on the Rotterdam starting in Copenhagen Sept 2, 2006 an asterisk-like number one is appended next to Copenhagen, and the legend below says that this indicates that a visa is required for this city, yet it does not say this for St. Petersburg where we know that a visa IS required. You can view this on the HAL website under Europe, Sat Sept 2, 2006 Treasures of Scandanavia and Russia, ms Rotterdam. I still suspect that this is a typo mistake, but when I called HAL they said they will call me back "within 3 business days". As this has never been mentioned on these boards with thousands of cruise visitors to Copenhagen this summer this has got to be an error, unless someone instituted some new anti-terrorism measures in the past 48 hours that isn't well known. I hope HAL reads these boards, and I've read that someone from the cruise line does, so that this "detail" can either be clarified or corrected. Until we see clarification we are still planning to fly into Copenhagen and boarding (hopefully) the Rotterdam on Sept 2 with our passports but no Denmark visa. Jim

I don't think that you need a visa if you have a USA passport. We didn't a couple of years ago. You might want to e-mail the Danish Embassy here in the USA to verify this. You should be able to Google the website address.:)

U.S. Citizens staying in Denmark less than three months do not need a Visa..Per the Danish Embassy WEB site in DCA..
http://www.ambwashington.um.dk/en/menu/ConsularServices/TouristBusinessAndTransitVisa/TouristAndTransitVisa.htm
Quote:TOURIST, BUSINESS AND TRANSIT VISA
Tourist, business and transit visa can only be obtained at the Danish Consulate General in New York
Important Information
People travelling on an American passport may enter Denmark and the other Schengen countries without a visa and stay as a tourist for up to three months. The passport must be valid 3 months beyond the last day of stay in the Schengen countries.Unquote

Thanks to those who responded to my original post, and I believe that a visa is NOT required for Copenhagen for those of us spending less than two days in this city. But the HAL website for our cruise on the Rotterdam Sept 2, 2006 still indicates that a visa is required for this city. Typos happen; note that I spelled Scandinavia wrong in my OP. I'm not going to let small problems bother me. Jim

The cruise brochure said a visa was needed but all the info I have read and researched tell me that you only need a visa if you are planning on being in Denmark for longer than 3 months. Even the Frommer's book on Scandinavia I bought says we DO NOT need one. Hal at DAS (dialysis at sea) tells me you only need a visa for St Petersburg if you plan on touring on your own. Me, I'll stick with the ship tours!!! See you onboard!!

What the asterick-like #1 means is that avisa is required for the cruise.
In order to board the ship in Copenhagen a visa, presumably for Russia, will be needed.
Compare an Amazon cruise out of Vancouver: there is a #1 beside Vancouver, meaning that you will not be allowed on the ship if you don't have a visa, in this case, for Brazil.
This seems to be HAL's way of designating what is needed in general terms for some cruises. Note that "vaccination" is found, without any information about which vaccination. Best to contact HAL and ask what their designations actually mean.

We were in Copenhagen on Monday... did NOT need a visa. The only visa we needed was in St. Peterburg and that was covered by our private tour with Alla Tours.

We flew into Copenhagen on Aug 9 and stayed for three days. Nobody asked about a visa. Customs glanced at our passports and stamped them.

Got back a few weeks ago from the Baltic cruise saling from Copenhagen---no visa, only for St P. Be forewarned, the Copenhagen airport, easy on arrival, was terrible on leaving, absolutely jammed. We stood in line almost 3-4 hours to get to the check-in window. Hope they've solved that problem for you!!Have a wonderful trip.
