Hi folks. My wife and I are taking the Zuiderdam to the Eastern Carribean in March 07. We've heard about Megan's bay, and we'd love see it during our stop there. Some questions:

Does anyone have any idea about transportation from where the ship docks?
How much are taxi's to and from?
How much are chairs/cabanas to rent on the beach?
Is there anything else within walking distance to do/see once we're at Megan's bay? Thanks in advance for your help!

Been to Megan's Bay many times. Always rented a car, usually near the pier. I understand the Taxis also make the trip....up and over the mountain and down the other side...but have no idea about the cost.

I don't know of any chair or cabana rentals, but they could have been added recently. There is not a great deal to do in that area other than the beach...again unless it has been added recently.

Megan's Bay is a really beautiful beach.

Hope you go and have a great time.

Check www.cruisecal.com to see how many ships will be in St Thomas on the day that you will be there. If there are a lot of ships scheduled to be in St Thomas on your date, you may be docked at Crown Bay - you will pay more to get anywhere from there.

Unfortunaletly www.********** doesn't post where the ships will be docked until the first of each month.

Depending where your ship docks , taxi's cost anywhere from $3.00 - $7.00 and the cost to get in "Magen's Bay Beach" is $3.00. Don't know how much rentals are but you will not regreat going there. Make sure you go to the
"Point Pleasant" and take a tram ride up the side of the mountain about $12.00 per person. It is the highest point on St. Thomas. It is located on the main street that takes you into Charlotte Amalie.

We have rented chairs and mats at Megan's Bay. You pay for them inside of the gift shop. They take credit cards. They also have decent food and a full service bar. The wait staff walk the beach and will take orders from your chair and deliver. If I recall the chairs were $5 for the day.

You can negotiate a round trip taxifare that is reasonable. I would not rent a car unless you plan on driving around the island or doing lots of beach hopping.

Enjoy

Zuiderdam typically moors in Crown Bay unless there are fewer than 5 ships in St Thomas that day - then it will be Havensight.

Megan's Bay is an easy cabride - you can take the shuttle to Charlotte Amalie for just a few bucks a head, then catch a cab over the hills for something like $6/per person. Admission to the park is $3/per person.

There is a concession stand where one can get drinks and nibblies, etc - but IMHO the best part of the beach is to the far left - beyond the crowds where the pelicans and birds will be diving into the water feeding and where there is more space on the beach to spread out and relax without being bothered by too many others.

If you bring your snorkel gear, you'll be able to see the fish that the pelicans are feeding on and sometimes even turtles. There are usually a few iguanas and little lizards in the brush behind the beach and on the rocks - you never know unless you look.

Its easy to get back into town in the afternoon - cabs will be there waiting to bring you back to town or directly to the piers.

Bring lots of sunscreen and use it!
Enjoy!
