View Full Version : Someone at Carnival REALLY does care!! $750 REFUND

Tom-n-Cheryl
April 13th, 2004, 09:57 AM
On our most recent cruise (Glory 3/20/04) all 4 of us (myself, DW, 2 sons) were booked. Well - the SUV was totally packed and running, when my (almost 17) year old son stated he did not wish to go, and would rather stay home (yes, I know he needs to be EVALUATED...LOL). On our last vacation he stated the same thing, and was "brought along" anyway. We knew what kind of "fun" all of us would have if we took him on the cruise.. so we hauled out his suitcase, and left him there - with Grandpa!

At check in, with 3 of us there and 4 tickets, I said "I know there is no refund for this. My oldest son..." - and preceded to tell the agent the same story as to why only 3 would be sailing that day.

Well --- this morning my online checkcard account showed a credit (from Carnival) for the exact amount of his fare... I am not sure if action by that booking agent is to thank for this - or if someone somewhere looked up our sailing (and future booking) history with Carnival, and thought it would be good PR... as it stands, I am using this $ as final payment on our next booked cruise!!!

I never asked for a refund, and frankly had written it off as a LEARNING experience...

Has anyone else out there had similar OUT OF THE BLUE $ situations with Carnival???

Amazing is the right word... It does not sound like the Carnival we all know and love...LOL

Perhaps it is the kinder, gentler Carnival...

Perhaps it is what they saved on that cruise by NOT GIVING OUT FREE PLAYING CARDS.... http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Some kids have problems.... consider yourself lucky if you have never had to deal with a mentally ill teenager as I do. Mine did not want to join us on our spring break cruise either. In fact on sea day he cycled into a depression and slept almost all day. I kept thinking of all he was missing out on. I think he managed to have a good time anyway. Melissa

I got a refund once also under the same conditions. We had booked for three, and at the last minute, we decided not to take our then 2 year old.

I got credited the third pax fare, plus port and tax. Not even a flinch. Didn't expect it, and gratefully accepted it.

well we are lucky our child does not have an illness. He really just happens to be at that age that staying home, playing on the computer and talking to friends (even if it is grandpa that stays here with him lol) is just more interesting to him than hanging out with mom and dad. I went through that myself so I can understand him. And believe me ... we had a great time and we knew he was fine at home. I doubt at this point he will go on another cruise with us, he just doesn't like cruising...to each his own! Our younger one (11)....LOVES cruising!!!!

That was very nice of Carnival. I am hoping for some special consideration from Carnival. In Dec. we made our final payment on our 3/12 cruise on the Legend. On Jan.7 I went to the er and was diagnosed with a brain tumor (thank goodness it was benign!) I had surgery on Jan.26. Due to recovery time, I was unable to go on this cruise. We were in the penalty phase and lost $600. I was told to write a letter and submit a letter from my surgeon. Carnival PVP said they wouldn't even consider it until after the books close on our sailing (6 weeks). I am hoping to hear from them soon.

Tom & Cheryl,
I understand about your son. It happens. My son (17) last year didn't want to go on our Pride cruise. We even offered to pay for a friend. He didn't go for it. It is the age. Now my son is 18 and didn't want to go on our up-coming Conquest cruise. So now I have a built in house sitter. Perhaps you were rewarded by the parent of a teen-ager fairy.
Happy for you.

Our son, who turned 24 on the cruise, sailed with us last year on the "Lights & Sirens" cruise. He works full time with an airline. Mom & dad invited him along & paid the bill. Even bought him a watch for his birthday. Well, we're cruising next year & guess who wants to join us. He's paying his own way this time, though, & bringing a friend.
I guess some do like to hang out with their parents. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

CapnJack,
Yes its a "Risky Business".

Everything in life is a bit of a risk. Guess it depends a lot on the particular 18 year old. I have 2 sons. The older one we left at home for about 4 days while we were away and he was 18, he took care of my 4 cats and my garden and apart from a messy kitchen when we got home no problem. My younger son (Mr. Party Animal) no way would I leave him alone till he's about 35!

Arlene F

Well if I am going to be perfectly honest we left my son home last summer for our cruise that he didn't want to go on. Of course I spent a fortune on ship internet emailing everyday and my sweet neighbor checked with Brandon everynight and a few of my family members and friends called him. Of course Brandon figured out that I had set this all up before we left. He even went to my office to help out my employer with computer stuff while I was gone. My house never looked so good. In fact if looked better than when I am home and my son actually cleaned and wash clothes. Of course he hasn't done any of that since. But I still worried but all turned out well. I hope I will have the same good luck this trip as well.

To all of you whose children like to travel with you, you are very lucky. Enjoy it. My son is going to start college and just got his first job. He just now informed me that he is now a responsible "man". "Man", that was not music to my ears. Oh well such is life.

Arlene
