As many of you know, I have a cruise booked leaving from NY on Dec. 16, 2006. It had not occured to me how cold it would be until someone reminded me that we will be in New York a month AFTER the Macy's Day Parade! Yikes!
So, I have ordered two jackets...

How did I do? Will these keep me warm in 20ish degree weather? My DH wants to just use his leather jacket. It is very warm on a motorcycle in chilly weather, I'm just not sure about SNOW! Please give me some form of advice :D

Mary,
Don't forget to have a hat and gloves. Knit hats are probably best, to keep your head warm. The jacket alone should be all you would need. If you want to buy the long coat, plan to wear it on the plane as it would be too big to pack. We look forward to meeting you in Honolulu. :)

They look very stylish.;)
I have work outside for years during the winter, what works the best is layers with the outside layer being waterproof..The wind will go right through some materials..

I plan on using the longer one for the nights we are going to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular and for Spamalot. I had to have them shipped to my sister because Burlington and Overstock don't ship to Hawaii :p "Dam" the Man!
My sister LOVES the long one. The red one was just delivered today, and hopefully she will tell me the same good news "great buy, Mary."
I had such a fun time "shopping" for these coats. I'm jealous I can't do it again next winter :(
I LOVE hats, and would NEVER turn down an opportunity to get more! I actually have a collection. I have seen gloves sold at the GAP here in Honolulu (at the malls) probably due to the tourists. Maybe I'll grab a pair then ;)
But what about my DH? Will his leather jacket be good enough or should I get him something? What do you think?
See you in 2 months!!!!!!:D

Mary,
The short jacket looks like it would work fine. As the previous poster said, you might want to plan to wear layers. In that case, don't buy the jacket to be close fitting, in case you want to wear a sweater under it. You will need to plan to wear lined slacks or to wear fine long underwear under your slacks. For an idea of how the weather in NYC might be, think Haleakala in the very early morning on a windy, damp day.
If you plan to spend several days in NYC you may need the long dress coat. If you will be there only overnight, don't bother. It will be a nuisance to drag it around just for one night's wearing.
A soft knit hat that could cover your ears, and lined gloves are a must.
Looking forward to meeting you in just two months.

Oops, your answer to Pat arrived as I was typing my post. Looks like the coat is a necessity. Oooh, Radio City at Christmas, what a treat! And, Spamalot too! I am so envious!
Your DH might want to plan for a sweater under that leather jacket if the wind is really raw. He will want a knit hat and gloves also. The jackets, hats and gloves will come in handy on deck the first couple of days of your cruise out of NYC also.

OoOoO! I forgot about sweaters! We'll both have to get some. Good thing I like to shop :D
My DH has some hideous yellow gloves (he got them for our trip to Chicago one March a few years ago) and he is looking forward to wearing them **shivers** eeewww. I might have to find a way to destroy them.
I hope these coats are fashionable (as I don't follow winter fashions as much as I do every other fasion).
I can't WAIT to meet everyone in October! I can't believe its only 2 months away. Then, at the same time, 2 months seems like such a long wait!

Being from Long Island, I know the potential for cold weather in NYC in December. It can feel really bitterly cold in the city when the wind is blowing between those buildings down those streets! I love the red jacket and taupe coat you picked out. Definitely bring a warm hat, gloves, and even a scarf. You probably won't have snow at that time of year, but since the weather has been so crazy, you never know. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular sounds great. I haven't been in to see the show in years, but it truly is "spectacular." Hope you have a great time!

Mary..I'm originally from Long Island & agree with Pam that you should get yourself a nice warm scarf, hat & gloves to go with your beautiful coat & Jacket..They both are very stylish..Also suggest a pair of boots..Even if you don't have snow you could have rain..My feet always were cold in the city..I was able to get my DH a pair of Totes Rubbers to go over his shoes when we went to South America & I purchased a pair of short Suede boots from Burlington Coat Factory..
Pam's right about the wind which whips through the streets between those buildings...It's mighty cold! ..Your DH should be fine in his leather jacket with a very warm sweater under it..He'll need a knit cap & a scarf also..My DH commuted to Manhattan every day & always wore his leather coat which had a zip-in lining over his suits..
One poster suggested light weight long johns & I agree..They come in very handy...If you ever decide to go to Alaska, or the Antarctic all those warm clothes will come in handy..I had long Johns on in South America & was glad I did!
You are going to be in Manhattan at a wonderful time & will enjoy going out at night and walking around to see all the stores decorated & the Christmas lights..Hope you are staying a couple of days..Christmas is the time of year I miss going into Manhattan:cool: ..
Enjoy your cruise..Betty:)

The red jacket is a winner and the buttons have BLING. You will fit in well in NYC. As for DH's leather, he should be fine especially if he can put a sweater or sweatshirt underneath. Most wear leather in NY, no matter how cold it gets.
As you have heard from other postings, it might be 60 or the wind chill could be -40 and anything in between. If it's typical, expect something in the mid- 30's to low 40's which is good walking weather.
Get yourself a hat. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Now we have to figure out what to do about your tootsies. I don't think Teva "withit" flipflops are going to work. Any kind of walking/running shoe and warm socks will be just fine. In the unlikely event of a lot of snow, just deal with it.
If you must have 3 jackets/coats, perhaps you will consider checking two of them at your hotel before boarding your cruise to reduce the amount you will be schlepping onboard.
In the end, it will be fine.

Thank you, everyone, I knew I would get GREAT advice here!
I just bought a new pair of boots at Noordstrom (I LOVE that store!). They are cute, and I might go back and get the same pair in the other color ;) Shoes and hats happen to be one of my weaknesses. :D
I'm really looking forward to New York around Christmas time. It's going to be awesome!
Thanks again!!

You're both going to have a great time. Michelle and I went there a couple of years ago. Even being used to living in New England I was surprised at how windy it got there in the city, Times Square was like a wind tunnel so make sure your husband gets some warm gloves and a hat too! I made the mistake of going out without one when we went to get show tickets one day and I was so cold a bought one from a street vendor, whenever I say "oh its not that cold out" Michelle points to the hat hanging on the coat rack
Until you mentioned the problems about shipping it never occurred to me that it would be such a problem to have things shipped to Hawaii, I guess thats the price of paradise :)
