View Full Version : Formal Night Attire

L2J
April 14th, 2004, 12:59 PM
I thought I'd wear a dark suit or a tux, but while surfing the net I came across a white dinner jacket and am now considering that. I'm curious to know if anyone has worn one on formal night. Is it too retro (read out of style) or is it not appropriate for a cruise or formal night?

I have seen them on most cruises not alot but some. Seems that they will wear black tux one formal night and white dinner jacket the next.

Ok, so people do wear them. I guess my my biggest concern is are they out of style??

Formal wear is never out of style, unless of course you are referring to the bright royal blue tuxedo from the "Miami Vice Collection" by After Six, circa 1985.

White dinner jacket is fine. Make sure it has a shawl collar or at least a peaked collar. No notched collars like on regular suits.

Our friends from NJ cruise alot, and I know the husband has a white dinner jacket. He's around 65 and has jet black hair...she's 60'ish and has natural blonde hair (damn her)...she always wears a black dress...they look dynamite together. I say wear what you feel comfortable in. Dress clothes never go out of style. Barb

If you want to save some aggravation and luggage space, rent one on the ship. They have both black Tuxes and white dinner jackets and multiple shirts. It will be in your room when you arrive and picked up on the last night. I did it on our last cruise and it worked out very well.

I checked the link and that really isn't too bad but then I got to thinking. I'm not sure that I'm comfortable wearing a rental for various reasons.

As far as the white jacket - white comes in polyester only unless I have it custom made. So I'm going with the ivory wool blend.

I think a white jacket with shawl collar would be great. Before anyone considers renting one, you should compare the price of renting vs buying. You can buy a decent tux at one of the big rental chains for not much more than a single rental. I bought one a few years ago and have worn it many times- cruises, a couple of formal balls, chaperoning senior proms, even our son's wedding. Now, I'm considering adding a dinner jacket.

Did you get to Sean on that site?
Talk about timeless elegance!
My SO already had a tux and then I made the mistake of playing him a scene from "Now Voyager" (before your time?), with Bette Davis and Paul Henried where Paul was wearing a white dinner jacket on a cruise.
He had to have one.
It looks wonderful. His also is a light weight wool, but I can't remember if it is ivory.
The polyester did not look as nice.
I love when the men dress up.

A friend from CC just returned from Carnival. You may remember nosnobunny aka beth. She posted over here before she went.
We just got a short message from her about her cruise.
I think she thought the decor a little over the top, and she raved about the food.
She is still vacationing and I am looking forward to hearing more from her.
She did say she had a good time.
I am very interested in booking Carnival, but I have always been afraid it might be too rowdy.
But talking to the people here, I am thinking maybe Carnival gets unfairly judged.
On my last cruise, Celebrity, we were at a beach in Cozumel the same time as a Carnival group.
Guess who looked like they were having more fun?
I also think that silly show "Shipmates" didn't do Carnival any favors. But I did take that with a BIG grain of salt.
So if I ever have any money again in my lifetime, I just might do it!

I don't know how old you are, but I have NEVER seen an adult (25-40 yrs.) ever wear a white jacket. I'm sure there are people out there that do, but I have only seen older gentlemen (late 50's and older) wear them.

Personally, I have not seen many guys wear tuxedos either on Carnival's ships, as more and more men wear dark suits on formal night. My experience has been that people on Celebrity (which often caters to an older crowd) tend to dress up more (i.e. tuxedos and long ball gown type dresses). Shorter cruises tend to be a tad less formal, and both Royal Caribbean and Carnival seem to have more guys in suits than in tuxedos.

I'm sure if you did wear your white jacket, it would be just fine. But you asked if we had seen others wear them, and I must say I never have (on a younger person).

I like to get dressed up - if you look good you feel good...right? I'm a little left of center anyway so I guess I'll be the only one on the ship to do this.....oh well...

White Dinner jackets are still wore by all ages on cruise ships and are acceptable provided they are not yellowed with age, full of moth holes and reek of the smell of moth balls from hanging in your closet for the past 40 years. I ususlly wear my red tie and cumberbun with the white jacket.

Eleven cruises so far. Up next:
Shhhh, it's a surprise!

Dance like it hurts, love like you need money, and work when somebody's watching.

Exactly. I remember the first and last time that I wore a hat to my Grandmothers dinner table - it was knocked off my head and Grandfather wasn't gentle about it either.

F5Loar - I was thinking my cumberbun/tie selection should be based on the color of her gown/dress??

Liv...Winds are 15 knots and holding....the whole world is a drop zone!

Make a girl happy http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif, go for the tux first formal night, and white dinner jacket for the second. I'm sure you will look smashing!

I sure hope that sailfish is wrong in saying no one in the 25-40 age group would wear a white dinner jacket. I will do my duty to try to change that! I am shopping for dinner jacket for DH, and a tux for my DS ( 2 proms and a cruise, cheaper to buy), and I may get DS the dinner jacket too. Now when I have one on each arm on my cruise, I will be the luckiest lady alive!

capt. carl,

Congratulations on your weight loss.
I understand how hard it is to replace a wardrobe.
Although mine always is being replaced with BIGGER items. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
I would have no problem with that. I just appreciate that someone is trying to follow the dress code best they can.
Have fun.
Now back on the treadmill for me!

And Liv,
Did you see the episode of the Soprano's where Tony also removes some guy's hat in a restaurant?
Boy, wish I had his you know whats!
