View Full Version : Two Questions

These may be considered to be stupid questions, so I apologize in advance. Can you leave the ship once you have checked in? We might want to purchase some bottled water, caffeine-free coke, wine, etc. to have on board. I thought it would be easier to lug all that when we can go right to our room. We are arriving the afternoon before we sail, so I am not worried about time the day we sail at 5:00 p.m. I figure we will have plenty of time to explore the ship while we are cruising. Secondly, what is a troll? In case I am one, I figure I ought to know how badly I am being insulted! :) Thanks.

Which port will you be cruising from??

No question is stupid, so please don't apologize, I feel you have asked a legitimate question.

To my knowledge, no you are not able to disembark the ship once you have embarked the ship on your day of departure. If you want to take some water, soda and wine onboard with you, you must purchased it before you embark.

Have a wonderful cruise.

I think it depends on which port. I remember leaving the ship to do just what you suggest, in Seward.
Also, I can't remember which embarkation port, but one had convenience and liquor shop inside the terminal, after you checked in, but before you boarded. Nice!

"Troll" is an internet term used to describe someone who comes to a bbs, like this one, and posts outrageous or provocative statements that seem to have no other purpose than stirring up trouble. I'm not sure whether the term derives from the mythical monster that lived under bridges in fairy tales and legends, or from the fishing term, meaning to cruise slowly, dangling bait to see who or what takes a bite.

In any event, your question doesn't fit any definition of troll that I've ever heard.

And your question about leaving the ship before departure is definitely not a stupid one.

not stupid -- first i personally dont know if you can leave the ship right after you board to go shopping -- what im sure of is that you would then have to lug all that stuff around waiting in line with all the pax that have not yet check in to go thru security

there really is nothing wrong with the water on the ship -- its as good as the stuff you are going to buy----------------personally -- im on vacation and i dont want to have to deal with carrying that stuff -- will buy on the ship as needed --the few extra bucks is worth the inconvenience to me

by the way tap water is free on the ship -- maybe you want to consider carrying on a bottle or 2 of water and just refilling it

in San Juan most depatures are late, (11pm) and you ARE allowed to leave the ship once you have checked in. There is also a duty free shop right in the Pan American terminal.

We have been allowed to leave the ship after boarding in several different ports and on different lines. You do not have to stand in line with those that are checking in either, there is usually a different entrance/gangway to use, like with the crew on a couple occasions.

OP has a good question and this is why I asked which port they would be sailing from.

It is easy to check into some ports, stow away your carry-ons and then go back out shopping.

I thank all of you who have responded to my query. Our port is Vancouver and we need our caffeine free coke. We have been known to have some if we wake up during the night and always have some when we get up, no matter how early it is. You rarely find the caffeine free out anywhere. (Diet just won't do!) I know it's a bad habit-what can I say? As for the wine, I enjoy mine before dinner and I think we might like looking out at the scenery while we sip. Also, I say why pay the cruiseline if it's okay to bring it aboard. The water is no biggie, except that I've read you might want some on some of the excursions where there is nothing available to drink. Whew, I'm glad I'm not a troll. I was envisioning the one in "The Three Billy Goats Gruff". My grandchildren love that book and the troll is not a pretty sight.:) I guess we will play it by ear. Thank y'all again.

Hi Peeps,

I live in Vancouver really close to Canada Place, where you will be boarding the ship. There is not really a place close enough for you to buy your water and pop. There is a stand at the pier, but don't know if they sell what you are looking for. I am with you and carry all of the pop and water on board with me. I just did it recently on the Zuiderdam July 8-15 to Alaska. I wouldn't drink the tap water, but the water in the Lido buffet and dining room are pretty safe. In Skagway, there is a grocery store, where we bought some more water. I believe the store is only a couple of blocks from where the ship docks. Happy sailing.

I wouldn't drink the tap water, but the water in the Lido buffet and dining room are pretty safe. It all comes from the same reverse osmosis system and is very safe to drink. It's also very good. (No stray mineral taste.)

Correct, and is far better than most bottled water with one exception. Aquafina (Pepsi's water) is RO'd, unlike most other bottled water which is simply filtered, at best.

In other words, the RO system on board any cruise ship produces the best water one can hope for.

Is there a reason why you won't drink the tap water in your cabin but will drink the tap water in the Lido & Dining room?

The tap water on board is safer & much better than our tap water here in FLA..We always use filtered water here only because of the taste..

We take one bottle of filtered water aboard the ship & then use the ship's tap water for the rest of the cruise...As jhannah & Host Walt pointed out it is very safe to drink & the best water you can get...:)

Also, there is bottled water in the room fridge and many times it is sold at the gangway for those venturing ashore...

Sure, you have to pay for it, but it's not more than you'd pay from a vending machine and it's easy.

We also drink the water on board - in fact, we were filling up our water bottles and taking them with us every time we left the ship. It was so hot & humid in the Med last week, we went through water like crazy. :)

agreed but here is part of the original post

<<, . Can you leave the ship once you have checked in? >>

i took this to mean that the op wants to leave the ship immeditately after checking in and then go shopping and my response was no

I often check in and leave the ship in search of my nectar, Dr. Pepper and sometimes for purposes of further touring the area. I have never encountered a problem with disembarkation and reboarding. Those doing BTB, do it all the time.

So the answer to the OP is yes you can and I understand your need.

Just FYI - last summer I met a friend in Ft Lauderdale for a week on the Zuiderdam. IN SPITE of flying to FLL the day before, her checked back had yet to catch up with her when we went over to the pier the next day. So we mentioned this to the HAL rep who was checking us in - probably around 1:00 pm. She said that if the bag hadn't shown up by 2:30 or so, we could consider getting off the ship, making a run to a Target or something via cab, buying some necessities, and then get back on the Zuiderdam. She said as long as we were back on 1/2 hour before sailing time (which I think was 5pm) it would be no problem. Turned out not to be necessary, as the HAL rep brought our problem/names/bag description to the attention of a supervisor working with the luggage and as soon as the courier service brought the bag to the pier, HAL baggage crew took it immediately to our cabin. In fact, it arrived in our cabin long before the rest of the bags. So, in some ports you can get off (or at least you could last year) and fine example of excellent effort on the part of HAL reps.

I was going to ask if anyone did that in Seattle.....and then I remembered what it is like near Terminal 30....there is nothing there!

I have done it in Seattle. Went to Pike Place via a quick taxi for the Saturday market and fresh flowers for the cabin. They are used to packing flowers to go for cruisers. They lasted the entire cruise.

You are supposed to be back on board 30 minutes before departure, like at any port call. It's really no big deal.

If your port is Vancouver, you should look for a Shoppers Drug Mart when you get off to look for supplies. They are like CVS in the states, they're everywhere and you should find good prices. Happy sailing to you!
