you can get those in a walmart in the jewlery department. Its a piece of rope thing that goes around your neck. Some have pastic holders that you can put in your sea pass card. some only have a clip that you put a whole into your sea card and it leaves your hands and pockets free. check out ebay. search for lanyards.
I paid 2.00 for mine with the card holder.

They are kind of like a necklace, the one's I've seen made of a heavy cloth strap. It loops around your neck and then comes together to form a straight strap with a clip on the end. You can use it to keep up with your sail and sign card, but a lot of people use them to display pins.

This is the thing used to hold your S&S card etc. around your neck, usually made of braided nylon, cotton or some other material. You can buy these (with logos / printing) at the gift shop on board or get one for free at the casino (the latter is a cheap plastic spiral cord).

Why are you swimming with your birth certificate? The only time you will need to show your birth certificate is boarding the ship. When you get off in port all you need is your driver's license and your Sign and Sail Card. A passport might help you out if stranded in another country but a birth certificate probably wouldn't get you any further than your driver's license so I wouldn't bother with it. If you really want to carry your BC with you, get one of those small, wallet sized laminated copies. They can put the raised seal on those the same as the full size copies.

Can the purser's office put a whole punch in the sail card or do we have to bring a hole punch with us?

Susan,
Not sure whom you need the lanyards for but thought I'd throw my two cents in on this. If you are getting a lanyard for a child (e.g. to hold their S&S card w/ or w/o their soda sticker?), consider getting the type of lanyard that "breaks away" into just a single piece if you pull on it hard enough.
Where I work, we frequently have to use lanyards to hold our security cards. While around moving machinery, we wear lanyards that have this "break away" safety feature so as no one will get hurt if the lanyard catches on something (like the moving machinery). Whereas the children probably won't be around moving machinery, they may be running down the stairs (or hallway) with the lanyards flying about their necks and OOOPPPPSSS, the lanyards get caught on a piece of molding, door handle, etc. Such an instance could lead to a severe neck burn or worse.
Just a word of caution from a concerned father.

The best place to get a lanyard is Disneyland or Disney World. They have all kinds and also alot of pins. Trading pins is a big deal there. So just swing by one of the Disneys on the way to your next cruise and you're covered! BTW they are all one piece with velcro so they are break-a-way. Chud

Kapcruiser, the purser's office can punch that hole in for you, or they can also do it in the casino.

Susan-
So YOURE the one who has the screen name I wanted http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
I found my lanyard in my local dollar store. In fact, I have seen them in every dollar store I have been in from NJ to SC to PA- mostly the type with the metal clips at the end.
Also, office supply places (Staples, Office Max, etc) will carry them as well as Claires- the costume jewelry/accessory store that many malls have.
Mine are packed and ready for Sunday!
