I'm sailing on the Volendam Nov. 13, and one of our ports is Roseau, Dominica. I was just on the HAL website checking to see if any new shore ex had been added for that port. Lo and behold, it's disappeared.

Does anyone know anything about this? I searched and searched and still couldn't locate it.

I spoke to HAL last week. They're rethinking and rebooking all of their Dominica excursions. They'll be back on the site in early September.

Thanks for the info, Joan and Joe. I was thinking maybe HAL had changed the itinerary.

Hi, Krazy! How you been?

This thing with Dominica is ongoing. I spoke to Ship's Services and Shorex, and nobody really knows nuttin'! They said they probably will have some excursions but who knows. I hate to wait til boarding to see them.

I spoke to a few independents. Dive Dominica sounds pretty good. But Nature Island Dive is the group to go with but they are not committing to anything since it sounds like they are who HAL contracts with. For island tours, Beno and Reyno are who most people are using. Check them out on the Ports board.

Then there is the controversy about when Volendam is leaving that port. Some say 1 PM to pick up at Cabrits and others say 3:30 PM and no stop there. Again, nobody at HAL knows for sure. Pretty weird, this HAL.

I highly recommend booking privately with Ken's Hinterland Tours. Check out their website ... http://www.kenshinterlandtours.com/

We did a Christmas Day Trafalgar Falls and Ti-Tou Gorge excursion with them. The price was fantastic, our tour guide was awesome and the island and sites were amazing (it quickly became my favourite island).

The tour was only a few hours but was great. Then in the afternoon, we took a taxi over to Champagne Beach and snorkled in the bubbles.

I loved Dominica.

Have done the river tubing twice and found that to be great fun!

I just looked at HAL's site --- the Dominica tours are now listed. :)

Be careful booking your own excursions on Dominica. Look at the HAL excursion "Carib Indian......" You start in Roseau and finish by getting on a tender in Cabrits. From previous posts I read the tenders in Cabrits are only for people on ship sponsored excursions. If that is so, the ship would leave Roseau around 12:30-1:00. If this true, it is very misleading for HAL to say we will be in port from 7:00am to 6:00pm. Please let me know if you have knowledge to the contrary.

This is what the HAL website says re the 6 hour tour - I see no mention of tenders:
"Explore the home of the 3,000 remaining Carib Indians, passing first through Roseau and stopping at the colorful Emerald Pool, located in Trois Pitons National Park. A 15-minute trek through the rain forest brings you to the 50-foot cascading waterfall of the enchanting Emerald Pool. At a Carib Model Village, one of the 3,000 remaining Carib Indians will be your guide and will introduce you to a group of Carib dancers who will sing and dance in their traditional costumes. Witness the skills of craftspeople using natural grasses to make hats and baskets. See Cassava baking and canoe digging. Visit Salybia Church with an altar made of a Carib Canoe and primitive murals. View large banana and coconut plantations from Horseback Ridge, as well as Morne Trois Pitons and Morne Diablotin, the highest mountain in Dominica. Exiting Carib Territory, you will see Calibishie fishing village on your return to the ship at Roseau."

You are correct. That is what it now says. When this thread started I looked and it said the same thing as the last time they were listed. It said at the end of the tour you would be taken through Portsmouth to catch your tender back to the ship in Cabrits. Maybe they had not updated their descriptions yet. I am glad to learn we will have a full day in port.

Yes, thanks for the info. The site is working also. Just booked Dominica's favorites for our upcoming Volendam cruise. We have been there before and had done another tour and this was different so we thought we would try it. Hope it's a good one!

That's Joan's first choice, although not necessarily mine (Joe). My problem: the two times are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. As a fair skinned redhead, I'm afraid I'll burn. Is the gorge shady (OK0 or sunny (a problem for me). If it's sunny, which of the two times is less likely to cause me to burn?
