We've put our money down and booked our most extensive (and expensive!) cruise yet. We're headed to New Zealand and Australia January 19! To a couple of retired school-teachers this is a really big deal. But we've always wanted to see that part of the world (he taught Biology and me--middle school social studies). And we always choose our cruises as a double benefit kind of vacation--all the wonderful pampering of being on the ship as well as going to fascinating destinations.
Anyway, I'll be on this board a lot in the next few months finding out all I can from you all about the ports and excursions, etc. Anticipation is part of the fun!

Congratulations! That should be a wonderful cruise. I know you'll enjoy it, and the fun of advance research and preparation.

It's the Statendam. We came down from Alaska on her last year, so we'll feel right at home, I know.

This sounds like a wonderful cruise; I'm so happy for you that you are going to do it. You'll have a fabulous time. :)
And don't worry about it being extensive/expensive. Once you've booked one or two like that it gets easier.

Cartervan,
First of all a big welcome to the Boards. You will find lots of useful information here.
Secondly, congratulations on coming "down under" to visit our shores. I am sure you will not be disappointed. If there are any questions regarding Australia, just ask away and hopefully I will be able to answer them.

We took that cruise a few years ago from Auckland to Sydney on the old Sky Princess. It was the cruise of a lifetime and very exciting. We had booked an outside cabin (portholes) as it was a 14 day cruise. On day 3, they came to close the hatches on the windows and the cabin became an inside for the rest of the cruise. We had run into a tropical storm and they were taking no chances. The ship was rocking and rolling day and night and the tropical storm was very exciting. We missed 3 ports, one of them being Tasmania. That was the reason for taking this itinerary. As a result, we ended up in Melbourne for 2 days instead of the 1. Melbourne is a beautiful city. I was glad that we had that long there. Lots of things to do. Cruising into Sydney Harbour was breathtaking, under the Harbour Bridge past the Opera House. I think I took a whole roll of film just of the Opera House. I figure I was only going to see it once, so made sure I had at least 1 good picture of it. There are tours, but we didn't do it. The gardens around the Opera House are very pretty. I hope you have a great cruise and I wish I was going again.
