View Full Version : Ship time vs port time in Cayman & Cozumel

I know this has been asked a bazillion times, but the search shows no results.
We'll be in these two ports in the summer (8/21 Sensation cruise).
Are the times listed on the itinerary ship time or local time? (or do we reset our clocks on board as we cruise) We're trying to plan shore excursions and the timing, particularly in Grand Cayman is very tight.
Thanks,
Mark

On all the cruises I've been on the ship's time stays the same and doesn't adjust to the times of the port you are in.

CruiseMark,
I've always heard that the itinerary is ship's time, which doesn't change to the port time. GC and Cozumel will be an hour behind ship's time. I will be on Sensation 5/15/04 on the same itinerary as you. I will be writing a review when I return and will include these things for you, if that would help.

Bird, that would help a lot. Thanks!
I'm mainly trying to figure out how early we can book a snorkeling tour in Cayman and still realistically get off the ship, tender and get to their offices.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
I asked the same question a few months ago, snd have since learned that the ships time stays the same as the port you embarked at. ALWAYS keep your watch on "ships" time, and you'll be fine.

I called Carnival to ask that same question and was told that the ship will change to port time. We go on the Sensationn on July 5th and I am concerned about the same thing - mostly the getting back on board part. I realize that just cause I talked to someone does not mean I got the real answer, but he did check with someone else "to be 100% sure" - his words.

Very simply put: Grand Cayman is on Eastern time, Cozumel is on Central time. Your ship, as well as the passengers, will adjust its time to reflect whatever port it's in.

This is NOT always the case. I am looking at last year's copy of the Capers from our Victory cruise. At the top of the page the day we were in Cozumel it says, IMPORTANT: KEEP YOUR WATCHES ON SHIP'S TIME! It also says that for the day we were in Grand Cayman. The only times I remember changing our time was when we sailed out of Tampa on the Celebration in '97 and possibly the Sensation in '99. Everytime we've sailed from Miami we've kept our time the same as Miami time.

Will do, CruiseMark!
Obviously, this is going to be a confusing subject, but since we both are sailing from Tampa, the info I give you shouldn't (wouldn't) change from May to a few months later.
I just read another post saying they had just come back from the Miracle and that the ship's time changed to port time, although the Miracle sails from Jacksonville(?) right now.
I'll settle this for you in a few weeks.

You get answers both ways (ship changes time, ship does not change times) and both answers are correct, with the reason being that it is up to the Captain as to wether or not he wants to change times. Some stay on time time of port of embarkation, some change just once and some change for each port. So if you want the correct answer you will have to get it from someone who recently sailed on the ship you are going on and disregard all other answers.

Also remember if you book a cruise through a independent operator verify if the meet time is ship time or local time. Have been on Disney, RCI and CCL in the last year and all were different but all tour operators but one (Nativeway in GC) operated on local time.

I want to reinforce what jedgar has stated. Carnival ships can and have changed "ship" time from the "departure port" time.
Last May the Paridise, sailing from Miami, changed ship time by one hour. This put the ship on the same time as GC and Cozumel and one hour ahead of Belize and Roatan. On Friday night the ship moved back to EDT.
Last summer this topic was discussed many times on these boards. There were many posters who stated that their specific sailing also changed ship time. So, the best plan is to stay flexible and remember "You are on vacation!" http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif It will all work out. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Wow, lots of conflicting info. I have always seen the ship change to reflect local time...but to be safe, call and ask regarding your particular ship...and then once abaord, check again. Just to be safe.
