And soda for that matter.

The 'no more free cake' issue got me thinking. I believe that the free cakes were done away with because the abuse made it too costly to continue. So in that vein...

Does anyone think that the oceans full of smuggled booze & beverages has something to do with the high prices of drinks? Or, stated another way, if there was no smuggling do you think the prices for drinks would be lower?

The drink prices aboard ship are no more expensive than at any restaurant/lounge on land.

If the cruiselines really gave a rat's behind about booze smuggling, they would stop it. NCL is much more vigilant than most, but a lot of it still gets through. Carnival just doesn't seem to care one way or the other..

I also agree that it's not worth the hassle to smuggle booze. Heck - the drink of the day only costs $2.75. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

I like to carry several of the "mini" bottles of booze with me on a cruise. I still go ahead and buy mixed drinks on board, I just use the mini's to "kick it up a notch". This makes the drinks last longer and much, much more effective!!

Just back from the Elation

Drink of the day in souvieir glasses were including 15% gratuity were like $6, $4.99 for refills.

Happy hour drinks of the day (fairly small glasses) $2.75

Most Bar drinks and wine were about $5 and up.

I agree they need to be 'Kicked up a Notch'. The drinks were not very consistant in the amount of booze in them. I had a few that 'knocked my socks off' so strong, then most were barely there!!!!!!!

Between the drinks and the Photos, it adds up really fast!!!!!
Spent about $1000 on Shore excursions(2 trips for 3 people (6), Photos(bought way to many), small amount in gift shop(ran out of sunscreen, next time need to bring a gallon with us), and the DRINKS!!!!!!!!

We had sooo much FUN!!!!!

The thing about the drinks is that you are there 24 hours a day for 7 days. If you drink 4 drinks a day apiece ($5) then that is (2 people)
$280 bar bill
Most people only drink the booze that they smuggle in their rooms or that is the polite thing to do.
They still spend a bunch at dinner and in the lounges, not to mention by the pool too.

I never found the drink of the day drinks to be lacking in the amount of alcohol in them, but I do have to agree that it varied with the bartender. The glasses (non-souvenir type) were about 5 oz. each. One thing I AM sure of is the price of $2.75. I still have the ship's receipts from 3 weeks ago - lots of them. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The other thing that was a good deal was the bucket of beer - 4 cans @ $11. There may have been change involved here, but I can't remember because I'm not a beer drinker.

One more question.

On RCI you can buy a bottle in the on ships duty free stores, and for $9.50 take it to your cabin.
(Even with the $9.50 it is still less than a bring from home price so it's a good deal)

A bottle of Baileys or Sheridans lasts the week. It's nice to have some on the rocks when hitting the cabin to change clothes for dinner or relaxing after a shore excursion.

Does Carnival have something similar?

We were just off RCI in January and any ship duty free booze purchases were not allowed to be taken to the cabin (same policy as other lines). Was the $9.50 a back-hander? http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

the prices don't seem too bad except a kamikaze shot for 4 bucks? should be a drink for that price. seems expensive for shots. the beers don't seem to bad. too bad i don't drink beer. they should offer some sort of all inclusive charge option. i'm sure many people would jump on that. i'm not that big of a drinker so i expect my tab to come in below $200 and thats including a soda card. i'm sure carnival is going to make a killing off some people. how much do you save buying the drink coupons?

Nope, it was in effect as of a couple of weeks ago on Rhapsody, and it was official policy.

I don't smuggle to avoid the cost, I smuggle for the convenience of being able to enjoy a drink in my cabin and sit out on my balcony (when I have one) without having to call room service or make 5 trips to a crowded bar. I'm on vacation and want to relax in my room from time to time with a drink.

Pirate, that's precisely why DH and I will be bringing our own modest amounts of alcohol. We are enjoying our first balcony, and we'd like to be able to have a drink whenever we want. I'm sure we'll make a decent dent in our S & S account with other drinks, too.
