I'm sure this was brought up before, but I never saw it, so.... Rather than keep the tiles in a drawer, what do all of you do with them? Other than use them as coasters? Mine are building up and I hate to throw them out, but can't figure out what to do with them. Thanks for any input.

We only need a few more and then we are going to do over the top of our bar in the game room in all the tiles.

I think we will be making a splash guard around part of our kitchen counters with our tiles. We have a large collection of them and just received four more on our Maasdam b-to-b's.

You inspired me to pull mine out of the drawer. But I don't think they will make good coasters. Looks to me like the condensation water from your glass would just collect until it rolls off the tile and still leave a water mark.

Might work for a trivet? Anyone know what HAL intends them for?

What are you folks talking abot? What tiles? Are they for sale on the ship?

Hi, I think the are repeat cruisers gifts for being Mariners. They were in our room one night with our Mariner pins. They are about 4 inches square and mine have a picture of the ship we were sailing on. One for each cruiser.

I have a small window over my kitchen sink -on the north side of our home [so the last thing I need is light-blocking curtains] I put double-sided "stick-em" squares on one of each cruises tiles and placed them over the window as sort of a topper. There are 8 small tiles along the top- all different. Anchoring each corner is our Volendam tile from the Pacific Rim cruise 2002 because it is approx double the size [ which makes a line of a total of 10 tiles] We received a DOUBLE long tile[ but the same heighth] from this last fall's Pacific Rim cruise out of Seattle -the pictures on these extended cruises are very different -they are maps with itinerary; this tile centers the tiles but is on top of the base row- EVERYONE remarks on the window/color/design. Two of the tiles are from both the OLD Noordam and the Nieuw Amsterdam -and they are each a Dutch couple in costume. Several are the larger newer ships [ Oosterdam & Zaandam] and several are of the much older ships the ships we cruised on replaced -like the Rotterdam [ I think?] It is a very interesting treatment/doesn't block light -and I did it on my own at virtually no cost.......well; unless you factor in the cost of 12 cruises!!!!!!;-) Anne

That is without a doubt the most unique and clever idea I've ever heard. It sounds great, and I plan to look around here to see if I can do similar. What a super idea.

For the first several cruises, my wife and I brought them home and threw then in a drawer. Over the years these disappeared.

Now for the past twenty years, we have just left them in the stateroom. One of the "perks" we could easily do without.

I also recently used the Scotch double-stick foam mounting squares (possibly one of the greatest inventions ever!). I chose the removable ones in case I ever want to move the tiles. I used four for each tile, since they are heavy, and lined them up between my wall shelves. They filled up the empty space and look beautiful! Plus, there is room for more as my collection grows!

Esther -Thank you; It was a fun project and it tuned out well [ I was not sure exactly how to "draw a picture" of what I had done -so that someone could say -" Oh -yah; I can do that!" and NOT be disappointed] For us, it is a visual of such HAPPY memories........

The tiles might make an attractive bottom to a serving tray and this wouldn't require a large number of tiles.

Nice idea. And when you move ( an sooner or later we all do) you can easily take them with you, to your next home. I also like the serving tray idea for the same reasons.

We purchased a some wooden trays at Michaels. They will hold 6 tiles each. I spray painted the trays dark blue. Then glued and grouted the tiles in place. We have hung 2 in our kitchen so far. I have a cheat sheet to tell what year each one is from.

Candy,

Thanks so much for the link! It explains it all. We'll be on the Noordam this November - I was on the Rotterdam way back in 1974 but HAL's records do not go back that far so I'll be treated as a "first timer" and won't get a tile.

Connie - Did you keep a scrapbook from that trip that shows any proof that you were on Rotterdam 30 years ago? Would HAL be willing to accept anything that you have so that you can get a Mariner number?

My Nana took me to London & Paris in 1975 & I have a scrapbook from that trip. Still have the PanAm & TWA airline tix, hotel bills, restaurant receipts, Tower & Louvre tix, things like that. Nana died in 1989 & I still miss her terribly. I think I'm gonna have to go pull out that book, make myself a cuppa & have a little memory. :)

You are absolutely right. The tiles do NOT make good coasters. Since they are tile, they just don't absorb anything. Duhhhh.

At work my office was relocated within the building just this week & I got an old beat-up wooden desk instead of the modular furniture. I had decided a couple of days ago that the paper towel I was using each day as a coaster for my ice water just didn't look quite right on the wooden desk. Then I read this thread yesterday & thought aha! I'll use a HAL tile for a coaster. Made such a mess today. Guess I'm back to that paper towel until I can get a proper coaster. :o

Thanks so much Candy. How very informative. I'm about to take my second HAL cruise and now I understand what the tile represents. I love the tray idea and that's what I'm going to start with my first tile.

Esther......I found frames in a dept. store and framed some...also attached some to grograin (spelling ??) ribbon and hung on the wall. You must have some pretty old ones. There are really pretty.

My computer room has pictures and memorbila from past cruises, so it fits in. There pretty enough to even hang thru out the house though. Rosemary

I thought that it was really weird that they bothered with cork on the back of the tile and yet I can't figure why??? Because as you discovered a coaster it is not! Even a trivet is often the victim of condensation and that tile is not wide enough to lift the hot item off the table.???

Decorations, YES!

Sunshine --- SUCCESS! :D I sent an e-mail to the Mariner's Society explaining my situation. I told them I have photos of me on-board the Rotterdam way back in 1974. They replied to me and asked for any details I recalled about the trip. I gave them my name, month/year of departure, NY to Bahamas, cabin with a porthole, etc. Well, this morning they wrote back to me and assigned me a Mariner's Society number ! I'm going to my TA on Saturday to pay the balance due on my cruise so I will give her my number. Maybe I'll find a tile in my suite in November! :D

Thanks for your help and suggestions,

When you're talking about the people in the Mariners Society Office in Seattle, you're talking about the nicest people there are. Ms. Binnendyk is an amazing lady who will go to such extremes in order to help someone. I'm not the least surprised you were able to explain your situation and get such a great resolution. Wonderful!!!

Congratulations on your 15th Anniversary. Hope you have many more in good health and happiness.

Have a fabulous cruise.

We signed up my Mother as a Mariner based on showing HAL Mariner staff her scrapbook from when she sailed with them in 1959. She was tickled pink.

Connie - That is SO exciting. I am absolutely thrilled for you. You won't just get a tile, you should also get invited to the Mariner's Party. Woo-hoo! (Free booze ;) ). It's a nice event, especially if it's held on the last formal night.

I noticed in your sig that this cruise is to celebrate your 15th anniversary in November. What a coincidence! Our 15th is this year too - November 16.

We're cruising on Noordam Jan 6 out of NYC as a sort of belated 15th celebration.

Hope you 2 have the best time. :)

I was visiting a friend in New York just a few days ago and he showed me his latest attempt to use his HAL tiles.

The entire kitcken counter top and back splash has been COMPLETELY done with HAL tiles. Professionally laid down, it looks like a display room in a Deflt factory!

Montlee - Shame on you!

You could make a few $$ towards your next cruise! Today on e-Bay the tiles are listed at about $3 each. OK, none of them have any bids on them, but still, its almost un-American to give something away when there's a buck to be made. ;)

I am joking, here :) It's quite generous of you to offer them.
