Hello, I need suggestions for luggage which is light weight. I'm always over the airlines limit and looking to buy new. Any help would be appreciated and no, not fewer shoes! Thanks

gulllake, it really depends on what exactly you are looking for. I have to travel for work a couple of times a month. I've gone through a few sets of luggage over the years and one thing I have discovered is that it really does pay to get quality luggage. If you are looking to get something as light as possible you could take a look at www.ebags.com (http://www.ebags.com), I think that they list the weight and capacity of the luggage they sell. I personally own pieces from ebags, victorinox, atlantic, american tourister, and travelpro. My ebags and travelpro carryons, and garment bags seem to be the lightest while still having great capacity. Unfortunately I cant think of a department store that may have a good selection where you can compare in person. good luck

My husband and I just purchased Travelpro bags and they are very light. My daughter is going off to school and we purchased her luggage at Costco. It's called Skyway zero gravity (30% lighter) and was very inexpensive and it seems to be well made. It contains 5 pieces of luggage (3 suitcases, a large, medium and carryone all with wheels) it also has a computer carrying case and a small duffel type bag. Mary

I just got Air Canada Luggage @ Sears and it's light enough for me. It's also very durable.

I travel frequently for business and use TravelPro and Delsey. Both are light (relatively) and durable. I just replaced my TravelPro carryon after 8 years of traveling - the case, wheels, etc. is still good - I finally broke the handle by piling on that one too many pieces of luggage on the top and using the case as a dolly. :D

we have a set of the travelpro walkabout lite and they are substantially lighter weight than standard luggage plus they have a much heavier fabric that resists rips and tearing. We had spent way too much money on the *bargain* sets, which were usually destroyed by the airlines after one or two uses. My husband likes the travelpro line because the items most likely to break (wheels, bumpers, handles) are attached with screws and are replaceable.
I also purchased a scale from magellans.com that you hold in your hand and hang your suitcase from. It packs really well and is great for the return trip when you don't have your bathroom scale handy. I think it was under $10, which is a lot less than what you're charged for one bag being overweight.

Aloha -

Nice pattern! I love it, not easily confused with all the standard black...

We have been using ebags.com for years and have gotten quite a few nice, quality pieces from them.

Unfortunately, my bags always end up being overweight. I think they need to make smaller bags period.

I also use ebags. They have quite a selection of types, brands and many sets in special colors.

Thanks for all the suggestions and time you all spent. I think the one regarding the hanging scale is something to look into.

I use Tumi - not only is their stuff plenty durable, but some of their newer styles comes in brighter colors making it easy to spot in the airport/cruise terminal.

I also like that they all have an ID tag that you can register w/ the company online and if the piece is lost it can be traced to the owner.

It is kinda spendy, so I look for their discontinued colors and shop eBay for the pieces I need. I figure it's worth paying a bit extra for the quality - beats losing a handle/ripping a seam/jamming a zipper/losing wheel someplace!

LOL, crocs are HUGE here! Everyone wears them!! I have another set of luggage that's grey with lepard print accents. I LOVE that set (and I got it at the Swap Meet!). Anyways, yes, they are shipping to Hawaii (FREE to boot!). One of the only internet companies that do!

The reason I don't buy expensive name brands (Tumi, Coach, etc.) is because I'm afraid that people will know if I am using an expensive brand, the stuff inside might be good to "have."

This is a long way to ask Ashuma and Brian how they feel about the possibility of more expensive luggage being stolen more frequently than the "cheapo" brands.

You can buy a "scale" for weighing luggage at "Magellans.com". They carry many travel items. The scale is very inexpensive. I travel with it.

This is a long way to ask Ashuma and Brian how they feel about the possibility of more expensive luggage being stolen more frequently than the "cheapo" brands.

I understand the concern - but since it isn't quite as ostentatious as LV or Coach luggage and I don't have leather Tumi, I feel that my luggage tends to sorta fly under the radar. It's definately easy to spot on the luggage carousel which also makes it easy for me to keep track of visually.

I've also created calling-cards that I use for my luggage tags (two per checked bag - one that comes w/ the bag and the other being a brightly-colored "jelly" tag) that have my personal info as well as a photograph of myself - so its pretty obvious if someone bothers to look that the person belonging to the bag oughta look something like me ;)

For example, when we disembarked Noordam in NYC, it was not one of my Tumi bags that went missing (and we were among the last off), but Scotty's generic-grey garment bag that was picked up by someone else (plus and he lost a handle on his wheeled bag which had also ripped a seam from overpacking...) Since then, he's invested in a couple pieces of bright-blue Swiss Army luggage and bright orange jelly tags...
:)

Thanks, Brian! Now I understand. I'm a Coach girl, and have always admired the Coach luggage. However, I could never actually buy it because I'd be so worried about it being stollen.

Your idea to buy the good quality luggage makes sense. Hopefully the luggage I recently bought will stand the test of time. Maybe one of these days I'll check out Tumi...that is after I break the news to my DH about the luggage we have currently being sent to us :D (plus 2 pairs of shoes)

A few months back I purchased several pieces from Travelpro (garment bag, upright, and roll-aboard carryon). I've been VERY VERY happy with each purchase. I'm amazed at how much I can pack into them and yet they still meet size requirements. Unfortunately, I have to be careful about the weight overage issue. For a LONG trip, however, I'm more willing to pay the $25 weight overage (if I have to) than the $100 over-size fee + $25 overweight penalty. :)

These bags are black, hence they look a lot like everybody else's. However, as has been the case in the past, I put red tape on the handles and sides of each so that they stand out a bit more. I've had no trouble spotting them almost immediately in a stack of luggage at the ship terminal and/or at the airport.

I would recommend Briggs & Riley. The make very sturdy luggage and warranty it for life. One of my bosses has 2 that he alternates using. In the 5 years I have worked for him I have sent both of them in once for repair of missing zipper pulls, squeaky wheels, etc. They come back good as new. They are not cheap, but if you add up the cost of a lifetime of luggage it makes sense, especially if you travel a lot, and he does.

I bought a set of Jansport luggage from Campmor.com 4 years ago before my first cruise, and all pieces have held up well. I bought the 25" Pullman (wheeled), the 22" carryon (which has backpack straps), the garment bag and the flight tote. All are soft-sided and black, but the flight tote has one side that's Velcro-ed which slides over the extension of the Pullman, and both the garment bag and the carryon will hang from the little seatbelt-style clippy thing on the Pullman. They are black Cordura nylon (I use orange duct tape to tell them apart). All the pieces also have padded straps you can sling over your shoulder.

I lost the clippy thing going through San Diego one time, and since Jansport warranties their luggage for life (!), they replaced it for free as soon as I called them about it.

I think it was on closeout when I bought it, but I paid just over $300 for all 4 pieces. Original retail was more than twice that. It's still in great condition and always holds as much as I need. I can get about 8 pairs of shoes in the various pockets of the garment bag. :D
