i don't want to be tipping needlessly but i also don't want to appear a tightwad. if we order roomservice - tip? if we go to the bar and have our soda cards - tip? if we wait to adjust (up or down) tips at the end of the cruise will we get as good of service as if we tip a little as we go? i'm so confused. also, suggestions for camp carnival tipping?

You should tip for room service. Usually $1 or $2 depending on the size of the order. If you don't have cash on hand you can write in the tip on the receipt they have you sign.

You do not need to tip at the bar for sodas or drinks. That is included in the price. If you frequent a certain bar more than others a little tip will ensure that you get served quickly by that bartender.

As far as Camp Carnival, on the cruise that I took with my kids they didn't use Camp Carnival so this didn't apply to me.

I have found that if you want service in life...tip, tip, tip. If someone is doing something for you in the service field just tip. It's not really that much $ and ensures a great time.
We also tip the cabin stewart and wait staff a little something on the first day. After that they work extra hard knowing they will be taken care of.

We usually tip the room service delivery person a buck or two depending on what we ordered. Since they began the automatic tipping we have just left it alone and tipped a little extra to those that we felt went out of their way to make your cruise better. We have never, however, tipped in advance of service and yet we felt that we have always received exceptional service. I have heard many say that they tipped their room steward extra the first day to get their ice bucket filled daily. Our most recent room steward did that twice daily for us and we didn't grease the palm in advance. You can always adjust the automatic tips up or down at your discretion.

Is there a general recommended amount of end of cruise tipping to dining staff and room steward? I mean over and above what is automatically added to the sign and sail.

The following is strictly my humble opinion:

I would think that the amount that is automatically taken out would BE the recommended amount.

At the end of the cruise, if the service was good, then leave the tips as is. That's what they're there for - they are rewards for good service, right?

Now if the service was EXCEPTIONALLY good during the cruise, then by all means tip above and beyond. The amount is solely up to you, and would be based on what you feel that level was worth to you above what you've already tipped.

Now if the service wasn't good, then you can go down to the Purser's desk prior to the last night and REMOVE or REDUCE the tips accordingly.

Just remember that these are TIPS, not wages. They are monetary rewards for service well done. They can certainly be expected by the staff, but they should never be assumed... http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

because no matter how hard or how long you beat a dead horse, it is not going to get up and run.
