I have an online reservation I made directly with HAL, which I would now like to transfer to a TA to get their better rate and also get the AMEX platinum benefits. I do not really care which TA I use but the first online agent I called(an advertiser on this board) told me the only way to do this is to cancel my reservation and have them write a new reservation. The cruise is 6 months out so I can do that but I have already made specific requests and bought trip insurance. Is there any reason why I cannot transfer an existing reservation?

There is no reason you can't do this. I would find another TA. It sounds like this one is clueless.

In most cases your insurance should still be ok. I have cancelled one cruise and booked another. I called the insurance company and they transferred it over. If you have Hal's insurance I don't know if this statement is true.

I transfered the on-board booking I'd made to the CC Zaandam group rate (obviously with one of the advertisers). I just had to send and e-mail (fax?) to the TA/HAL requesting the transfer. We still have the same booking number, so it wasn't a cancel/re-book. It's easy enough to check and see who the TA is that is handling the CC group sailing ;)

I just switched our booking for a Nov cruise from Holland America to a TA and it was easy. I just had to fax the request to the TA and she handled everything. I called HAL first to make sure that the Cruise Consultant that I had been working with would not loose a commision as she has been very helpful. Everything including the insurance transfered. I saved almost $200.00 dollars and we got perks from the TA (wine, dinners at the Pinacle Grill, and a picture credit).

We also transferred our booking from HAL to our T.A. after I had booked on board the Maasdam last year.

I just had to send a fax to HAL and request that the booking be handed over to our T.A.

By doing this we saved over $700p.p. on the booking and also kept our shipboard credit. We certainly did not lose our booking or have it cancelled.

Clearly, I had someone who was not interested in finding the answer. I guess I should be happy I found this out before transferring my booking.

Yes, you are very fortunate! :) The CC Boards are a plethora of information!

No Problem...Get yourself a new Travel Agent..This one obviously doesn't want to handle the paperwork..

We transferred our original HAL "F" class booking to an on-line TA last year for a 2006 cruise...We had to FAX a letter to HAL authorization the release of our booking to our new TAS..They automatically released the booking to the Agent who was then able to cancel our "F" Class booking (at our request) & rebook us in a better "E" class booking at a less expensive rate..They applied our original Deposit to HAL for the new booking..
