View Full Version : Lobster in Lido for dinner

I know as a general rule lobster is not served in the lido for dinner. I do vaguely remember someone posting that they got it brought from the dining room kitchen.
I did the search but there were way too many posts to sift through.
Anybody know if this is possible, particularly on the Zaandam, but also on other HAL ships?

I've never ordered room service for dinner, so this is not from personal experience. But I have read many, many times on this board that you can order from the dining room menu. You must order within the first half-hour that the dining room is open, for delivery at a time of your choice.
So, go ahead and order that lobster without a worry in the world.
Enjoy.

Yes, we have ordered lobster via room service - more than 1 each. However, have not requested it brought to the Lido, so don't know if that happens.

The only times I saw lobster in the Lido was on our 30 day cruises but it can be orderd from RS on any cruise.

Room Service takes a dim view of delivering to anyplace other than a cabin.
Friend got the munchies one night while still with a group in the Ocean Bar very, very late. So, friend did what any other hungry, intelligent cruiser would do: he called room service from the bar, for delivery there. :D
Friend was told in no uncertain terms that he was not to do that again.

Darn, I was just thinking that as an option.
I am thinking I will just check with the lido very early on lobster night to see if it can be accomplished. I think with enough notice and some patience for it to come it could work.
I am hoping whoever accomplished getting lobster in the Lido will see this thread.
Thanks for all the replies.:)

Once the tray is delivered to your cabin you are free to carry it anywhere. Even the Lido.
Friend now knows to have late-night snack delivered to 001. He then leaves the Ocean Bar and heads straight up on the elevator. Meets Room Service at the door, then returns to the bar. With his tray.

Hmm that might actually work....but i think I would have it delivered to my actual cabin after I have taken my Mom in her wheelchair up to the lido.
We have an aft cabin on the Zaandam, so the elevator will be a straight shot up to the lido restaurant. Will only take seconds to start on that lobster!

One evening, we saw a guy on the elevator with a tray. Thinking he had picked up food in the Lido & was headed back to his room, we casually said, "Oh, going to enjoy your meal in front of the TV!" He smiled & said, "No. I got this from room service & I am headed for the Lido. I don't like to eat in my room or the dining room, but I often want what is on the dining room menu." I thought that was great! Have it YOUR way! :D

Cool! That would work.:) Especially since it would just be the lobster.....I can get all the sides in the lido.

I think you can get lobster dinner with your Mom accomplished. I would tell the "boss" of the Lido what you want and why you want it. If he can not accomodate you, shame on him. He may not but still shame on him (last time on HAL I was told no shrimp cocktail each night, didn't ruin my cruise but it did stick in my mind). So plan B would be like you said order room service to be delivered with the lobster and anything else you might want, situate Mom in the Lido, fetch food.
Two personal observations: I had to take LIDO food to my room many times, going that way is quick and easy so vice versa should be fine.
Years ago DH and I made reservations for his mom (in perfect health and loved to dress up for dinner) to go on a cruise with us. She would never commit to going. She worried about it constantly and finally one day after the non refundable $200 deposit was credited, she said NO. So we lost her deposit. We had a great time, and at least we knew we had tried. Now she is not able to go and she really regrets not joining us. I regret it to, it would have been a very happy memory. So when you and your mom are dining in the Lido you will be the envy of this cruiser.:)

Ditto, Happy Cruzer, about Moms! At 83 years old, my Mom died in June 2004 after 10 years of Parkinson's Disease. She went many places, including cruising, with DH & I & the 3 of us had a great time just laughing all the way! Now while traveling, DH & I often say how much we miss her, but follow with how lucky we were that we took advantage of the time we had! I bet Tinknock50 will have fond memories also & I am so glad that he/she is giving his/her Mother happy experiences.:)

I am touched by your "mom" story. I have taken my mom on many cruises and many times people have come up to me and said they wished they had taken their mom with them before she had departed from this life, or when she was still able to go. At least others who have read this will consider taking mom while they have the chance. You don't have them forever!
Good advice on the lido "boss" !

Oops, I forgot. On rare occasions, we had a problem ordering multiple lobsters thru room service - DH LOVES lobster. So there are some options to avoid such an incident, if ordering several per person -
1. Lie - sorry, but it does happen in this world! For instance, if 6 are ordered, say it is for 6 people - that works!
2. Talk to the Food & Bev Manager in advance & he will advise the RS person to accept your order.
Now, Tinknock50, I do not think you need to order RS. I'm sure that since your situation involves a handicap, the F&B Manager will happily make arrangements for the lobster to be delivered to your table in the Lido. When you board, go to the front desk, & request to speak with the F & B Manager - they can call him & then put you on the phone. If he is not available, try to get a time & place to meet, or leave a message for him to call you at a time you think you will be in your cabin. Explain your situation & request & I bet you will be well taken care of. (Also, find out where his office is & he often has the door open & willingly accepts "walk-ins". Good luck & enjoy that lobster - yummy!:D

Your post made the tears well up......and I am a guy.
My mom has parkinsons and dementia. It is hard to say how much she enjoys the cruise because she has trouble collecting her thoughts and verbalizing. She has always loved the music on board the most so I take her to many music venues. I am her primary caregiver and take her along mainly because it is hard to find someone suitable to care for her for a week. But more importantly, I just love having her around....she frequently laughs and smiles and she is a very happy person. Truly a joy to have around. A cruise gives me a change of scenery and I think she enjoys it, even if she can't express it.
Again, thanks for the kind thoughts...it means a lot.

oh my what a small world it is.
The Mom that I was talking about is now in assisted care with Parkinson's. She is still doing pretty well physically but mentally she suffers OCD and depression. So changes really throw her off.
It is amasing that we all can understand each other's experiences of the joy and the pain. And even the fear we face day to day. Life's a journey and we will be measured by how well we handle the entire ride. Sean adnt the twoatsears, you guys seem to already have earned your wings. DH is working on his, I'll be put to the test with my Mom soon.
Wow, what a small world.

I was on the Zaandam in June and I know that a lot of the same food that was on the menu for the dining room was available in the Lido for dinner - including cheese plates and cakes from the dessert menu so I would think it wouldn't be a problem getting lobster in the Lido. I would just ask the person in charge of the Lido the first night and then if there is a problem go the room service route. Wish I had thought of ordering lobster from room service myself! Good luck and most of all, have fun!

Nice thoughts, happy cruzer. It has to be harder for you then me with your mom's depression. You just want her to be as happy as possible.
My mom laughs the most when I have to assist her....it's almost like the folly of life amuses her.
There is no greater calling in life than to be of service to another human being. Keeps you from being self-focused which, when all is said and done, does not make you happy.

Good suggestion! When I was on the phone to Access and Compliance about making milkshakes with ensure because my mom sometimes has problem chewing food, they suggested I contact the Matre'D to arrange it.
Thanks for all the help.....and I WILL get my lobster!:D

Your mother is so very lucky to have such a wonderful son! I am sure she was a loving and amazing mother when you were young. She must know she did a great job and is so proud of you. May you always have joy and happiness. You definitely deserve it!

Thanks for your kind thoughts ,Joan.
I got my love of travel from her. In the past, nothing gave her as much joy as planning the next vacation! Now I do the planning for her and I love it just as much as she did!:)
