View Full Version : Which Transfers to use?

Hi everyone!
We are wondering here which would be best, time-wise transfers on our own, or ship's. Here is the scenario. Our flight leaves Rome Airport, approx 11:00 am to go to Toronto. What time will the transfer take place to leave ship?
I realize they don't want people lingering around, but since it is 11am, would transfer likely occur around 8ish? Also do they make several trips to airport?
Any help, from previous experience would be appreciated. Thank you:)

Wow, that's a very early flight; & I wonder if it's even doable. I'll assume that your cruise ends in Civitavecchia (which is a pretty long way from Rome). Sorry, can't remember how long it took to get into (the center of) Rome when we hired a private driver for a day excursion (or where the airport is in reference to the city center). They used to suggest 2 hrs. for international check in. With the additional security required now, I would assume that it will take longer. So, you might need to be at the airport by 8am. If it takes an hr. or longer to get to the airport; you see the problem? If the ships arrives that morning (say 6 ish), it takes a couple of hours to clear the ship before any PAX are allowed to disembark. The only thing that might work in your favor is if the ship arrives in CIV. the day before. If that's the case, they will start disembarkation as early as 3:30 am (which was the case recently on Regatta after an overnight in Venice). Good luck w/ this.

Yes, Insignia does arrive in Civitavecchia the day before flight, so that's one concern off list.
You think 10:50 is early, should have seen one option offered, around 7:30 am, lol, I would have just stayed up and help serve at the buffet:) .
We have decided to do private transportation now to FCO and will see what the drivers I have contacted say about time frame. From my understanding, the Airport is about midway between Civitavecchia and Rome.
Thank you Liv4cruzin for your input.

we are on the same cruise as you are, and we have a 10:30 am flight out the last day to JFK. We went with their (Oceania) deviation, so they must realize we have to make the flight..:(

Guess I didn't make myself very clear when I first posted.
I was concerned that, regardless of my time of flight departure, be it 9 am or 11 am(as it is), due to smaller numbers of passengers and given the distance to Airport, they might just put us all together, to be cost effective, therefore my efforts to attain a later flight is moot point.
That is why we decided to go with private driver to hopefully reduce the time sitting around airport.
Have a great cruise Conderost, I think I finally have a handle on my itinerary!

They may group you with others that have early flights
When we came back from Dover we had a 12 noon flight out of LHR.
We were off the ship and on the bus at 6:15 am at LHR by 8:30 am.
I would have prefered to sleep in a bit and leave at 9am but it was not to be!;)

Yes, that is exactly what I was afraid of, hence private transportation.

We fly somewhere every month and with all the new security going on all over the World, the airlines suggest you allow three hours for International air travel and two hours for domestic. Oceania will get you to the airport within the three hour time frame. Lht28, how would you have made your noon plane if you got there at 11:30 a.m. Oceania also wants you off the ship by 9:00 a.m. so that they can clean it up for the arriving passengers.
We were traveling to Florida from Los Angeles on Orange alert day August 10th and were glad we allowed over 2 and one-half hours. Because of the heightened security, many people missed their flights. We just made it. We always bring books to read to pass the time.

I guess you missed my ;) at leaving at 9 am but we could have done an 7:30am transfer and still made the flight this was before all the new security measures.
I am not a morning person so getting up a 5 to get food is not my idea of ending my vacation.

Lht28,
We had a nice solution to the early wakeup on the day of disenbarkation. When we arrived in Buenos Aires several years ago, we left the ship at our leisure since the ship was overnighting there and we previously did an extensive tour in B.A. We took a taxi to the Sheraton and left our luggage there for the day (our flight was at night). We strolled around Buenos Aires and had the hotel call us a cab to the airport. This was so much better than the rush to get off the ship the last day and get to the airport for our flight.
