Please tell me what you did when the ship docked in Calica. What is the best excursion or did you stay there? HELP!

Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance!

We took a Carnival tour that took us to a few different shopping places and the beach. I believe it was about 5 or 6 hours.

we rented a car and drove to Tulum to view the magnificent ruins. Sooooo glad we did this as it was probably the biggest highlight of our trip.

Tulum is wonderfull......we loved the ruins.

There is also Xcaret, the Eco-Water-Park, a wonderful place also..we loved the float down the underground river...http://www.xcaretcancun.com/

Nearby Playa Del Carmen is a nice little town with beaches and lots of shopping

http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif You sure don't just stay in Calica! Not unless you want to grab a shovel and start digging rocks! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Just to prepare you for a semi-shock: Calica is a rock quarry, period. There are about a dozen vendor stalls, taxis, and busses. That's it. I was so surprised, thinking Calica was a 'real port'.

The taxis will take you to Playa del Carmen ($10 each way) OR to one of the beach parks. I opted for PdC, and will go to a park next time. I've heard some of the beaches are very nice.

The town of PdC was undergoing quite a bit of construction in September. Hopefully, that's done by now, and you won't walk into potholes. Now if the rude shopkeepers have eased off a bit, you'll enjoy the town...maybe they won't follow you out of the stores to buy stuff. Also, prepare to encounter beggars on the streets.

Sorry - I don't like to be negative, but this just wasn't my favorite port-of-call. I know some folks loved the various beach areas.

In Calica we did the Calica Beach Break through Carnival. The price is reasonable, the beach beautiful and not to mention there was an open bar. After the beach you had the option of going back to the ship or being dropped off in PdC. We opted for Playa de Carmen, shopped a bit and then took a cab back to the ship.

I vaguely remember doing a snorkeling trip. It was nice but nothing spectacular.
The real fun however is Senior Frogs. It is right on the water in Playa del Carmen. It is as nice of a beachfront bar as I've found in the area. Lots of great music, friendly waiters and a great waterfront view. Nearby, on the beach you can rent sailboats. Drunken sailboat races is something you shouldn't miss!

Xcaret is one of the few ship's tours I'd highly recommend. It was beautiful and fun. We loved it!

We went to Playa del Carmen, took the ferry to Cozumel (about $0.50pp) and went scuba diving, then back to Playa del Carmen and right to Senor Frogs! Lots of very happy cruise passengers. We met more people from our ship at Senor Frogs than on the ship!
