Just wondering because on our first cruise out of Miami we went together and had no problems. On our second cruise out of San Juan we went together and the customs agent questioned us like, "What is your relationship? How do you know each other? How did you meet? How long have you known each other?" He got chosen to get searched but I did not. I don't know if it was because I used a passport and he used a birth certificate or whatever.
I know that we have to do two forms, but should we approach the counter separately? Thanks.

Until you are married, you will need to do two separate customs forms. You should just go through the process as two individuals since by law you are not a "couple" legally. It will be easier in the long run and less questions to have to deal with. You two can go through the line together and just get it overwith.
Just go and have a blast. Don't let something like this worry you.

Yes, approach seperately as only families are to approach together, but you can still stand in the same line.

It has been my experience that these sort of episodes are quite random. I travel internationally quite often. Clearing immigration usually entails questioning, purpose of trip etc. Clearing a cruise has allways been a breeze for me.
I would suggest you stay with your travel companion, that you answer all questions honestly and if delayed just remember customs are doing what they have been trained to do.

I have to agree with yst that this is random. My wife and I were told to fill out two different customs forms this morning because her ID is still in her maiden name. However, all customs did was take our forms and wave us through.

I am a 50 year old single male and have traveled through Customs many, many times. I have never experienced any questions at all. I have probably been with a female companion 90% of those times. I have always gone through customs together and would never go through seperately. It is just plain the wrong thing to do. You travel together, you go through customs or immigrations together. We would always fill out seperate Customs forms however. Different last names, different forms.
