Mom Back from Paradise - HATED food

Her first cruise on Carnival, and she calls me to tell me about her cruise. After hemmin and hawin, I figure she's trying to tell me something. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Out comes the food comment, which she's obviously holding back, but not so well, like I represent Carnival food.

Anyone else sail the Paradise lately that can tell me about the food?

My mother isn't crazy about the food either. I loved it. She likes things plain and simple so sauces and stuff on her steak and pork didn't trill her. LOL

I was on The ship in March. Thought the buffets were good. The dining room was hit or miss. Soups were thin and pastas were dry. Jerk pork was wonderful as well as the shrimp. Lobster was actually good. I was slightly disappointed.

My DH and I were on the Paradise 3/7 and we LOVED the food. We always found something good to eat. We ate in the dining room 5 of the 7 nights and we always ate breakfast and lunch in the Paris restaurant. We only ordered food that we thought we would love though. Our entire table felt the same. I had heard too many horror stories before I left and was kind of nervous, but there was nothing to be nervous about. This food was the same kind of food my DH and I would order at a restaurant. If someone doesn't go out to dinner much, they might not like it because it's not like the things they are used to.

On the Paradise in November. The food was awesome everywhere. The only problem we found was the brownies we ordered from room service. They were dry and no flavor.
Have a teen who is pretty picky and he never complained about the food.

I think Carnival food is awesome, especially in the main dining room.

Let's be honest though, the breakfast buffet on the Lido deck leaves alot to be desired. But, it's good enough to get your belly full for your fun day ahead!!

I agree with judyf...sometimes elderly people aren't into fancy meals. My father-in-law for instance; his favorite meal is meatloaf. (can we all say, YUK?) If he went on a cruise and saw all that food presented the way it is, I think he'd be wishing he was at The Cracker Barrel!

Agree with doulasue - breakfast and lunch were not Knock your socks off (although deli was very good) but Dinner was exceptional every night. Not sure of the OP's mothers cruise but on the Legend this was the case.

We were seated at a large table with seniors one time. (Can I say crabby old people?).
What complaining!
Nothing was good for them.
They wanted plain lettuce and tomatoes for salad. One night they wanted tomato juice. Of course the assistant waiter had to go find these things and we wouldn't see him for a long, long time.
They would push the food around their plates with big sourpuss expressions through the whole meal.
The waiter was constantly asking if he could get them something else.
They would decline his offers and continue to whine.
One guy would complain about the desserts every night. Too rich. "Don't ya have any pound cake?"
Geez, I wanted to smash a poundcake in his face.
We really wanted to know why the heck they were even on a cruise.
We both decided if we ever get like that,it will be time to call Dr. Kevorkian.
Hopefully, I have a few good years still left.

Can you request to be switched to a different table if your fellow diners are so bad? I'm pretty laid back about things, but it irks me when people drive the waiters nuts with their demands, and refuse to be satisfied with their efforts to please.

You know, we thought of that. But here was the problem. It was the second week of a back-to-back cruise. The first week we had a wonderful waiter who actually switched his table to stay with us the second week.
Would not have been nice to leave him after he did that! So we put up with it and now we have fond memories and great examples of how not to act as old age creeps up!

When in doubt, ask for the strip steak and baked potato. There were nights on the Triumph in December that my Mom didn't like what was on the menu and asked for (and got) a nice size strip steak and baked potato.

Took my old 83 year old mother out to lunch and had to listen to half an hour of how the Charlie Browns in her old neighborhood made better chicken pot pie than this one.
Seems there were not enough carrots in her pie.
She was never a complainer in her younger days.
My daughter and I just rolled our eyes.

Yeah, I absolutely LOVED *cough cough sarcastic* The garlic mashed potatoes with RAISIN gravy...

Not to mention the majority of the food was hot dogs and hamburgers in the buffet and you would be lucky if any of it was warm.

I sailed Paradise last week and the food was fine. Gazpacho soup was excellent, vichysoisse sp? was excellent Chateaubreand was excellent. Lido food was best I've had on Carnival. Looks like you have a complainer on your hands

The food was fine? I don't think we sailed on the same boat. The dining room was great..the buffet was dog food. If that was the best you have had on carnival Im sorry.

None of the other carnival boats I have been on were this bad. There was one good day, but not good enough to make up for the rest of it. We weren't the only ones with this opinion either. Have you ever cruised with another company? You should compare.

We haven't been on the Paradise, but have many others and have usually found the food to be very good. DH likes his simple.... a meat and potatoes kind of guy. ;) He eats steak A LOT! On the other hand we both like to try new things and there is no better place than on a cruise. Be adventuresome, order something different, :eek: if you don't like it, send it back and order something else, same cost. $00.00! We all have different tastes, if all were alike it would be a dull world!

On my Liberty cruise one senior woman at my table complained that the chocolate mousse was too chocolatey...lol. Carnival must be doing something right with the food though because during a sea day on that cruise the CD announced that we had broken an all-time Carnival record for daily food consumption.

So - I will comment on the food in November, 2005. I thought it was very good, always 6-7 entrees to choose from every evening in the dining room. You can always send something back and order another choice, so I can't imagine anybody not finding something they like.;) Appetizers to soup/salad to entrees to desserts and espresso, I've always found more than enough to satisfy my discriminating taste buds.

I always have all three meals each day in the dining room, so I'm not too familiar with the buffet offerings, but my DD had lunch on Lido a coupla days and said it was just fine.

Anyhoo - if somebody can't find something they enjoy from all the many different types food Carnival serves all over the ship - there's just something wrong. It's not what I classify as 'gourmet cuisine', but MOST folks enjoy Carnival food.:)

Yeah, I completely agree. I tried to be proactive and try to find at least one thing I liked on the lido. Loved loved the sandwich bar thing. Like I said, Dining room was wonderful..but alot of the times we missed lunch or breakfast due to leaving for excursions. I think I would have been much happier if I would have stuck with dining room.

Oh well...at least they had a nice frozen yogurt machine..that made me happy. Just wishing there were some dressings for it.

LOL--Celtic Selke--there are a lot of elderly people like that in general. I am a social worker in a nursing home, and boy, I can tell you some stories about cranky people! :p Granted, we have many wonderful, amazing folks too. I don't understand why people complain on a cruise...everything to me is always wonderful!!!!

I've always seen a few bowls of toppings (chocolate sauce, sprinkles, nuts) on a side table near the bowls and cones by the soft serve ice cream/yogurt machines.
