i never noticed this while on a ship but i thought i read somewhere that the floor carpeting on cabin hallway floors are a different color carpeting for the portside and the starboard side ---------if they are it would make sense to help pax find an odd numbered or even numbered cabin when they get off the elevator and feel turned around

Hey, that happens to us all the time (you can invent whole new line dances based on the patterns you make trying to go the right way) until we start focussing on a particular painting, piece of art or display and base our course to our cabin on that - Never noticed the different pattern/color carpet on port/starboard though but also really never paid any attention to it! - something to watch out for next time along with the hidden location of the ice machine;)

Are you sure???
I'd hope that I'd have noticed since I'm always looking for things like that - Rotterdam (V) had different scultures mounted on the walls off the main staircase that folks often used to note which corridor led to their stateroom.
I end up looking at the ocean going past the glass elevators to know which way my stateroom is...
Copper - Are you the one poking into the stewards pantry searching for ice???

never paid attention to color of port vs. starboard side carpets
think they're the same
do know that when you get off any elevator, there are signs clearly designating which cabins are in which direction
depending on the time of "night", though, the ability to read clearly might be a "problem" SIGN OR NO SIGN :D
maybe the answer is to have "greeters" stationed at each elevator to help .. then again, if you don't know your cabin number, you could be in for a long night in a promenade deck chair:)

Hello Lougee,
I do not remember if it was Princess or NCL, but they had a different color carpeting forward than aft. I also think I saw someone with a badge stealing ice from the service pantry.

I do not recall carpet being different colors port/starboard on HAL ships. Wouldn't help coming off the elevators, anyway, since the elevator lobby carpet is all the same.
Like Brian, I often look out (on the Vista ships) to see which way the water's going! If you take a panoramic midship elevator, you can get your bearings before you get off on your deck.
And speaking of carpet, I think it would be nice if HAL implemented the day of the week inserts in the elevators like they have on the Prinsendam. Those are cool!

On most Princess ships, hallway carpeting is different colors, Port and Starboard.
I don't think any other cruise line does that.

On our Jan. cruise the Amsterdam had day inserts, the new day is put in about 3am by someone.

I can tell you for certain that on the "suite" decks of all the ships we have been on the carpet is the same color in the hallway on both the port and starboard side of the ship.

Who pays attention to what day of the week it is on a cruise? Days of the week are for work...
I'd rather see rugs reminding us what port we're in or what the dress code is for dinner that evening...

On the old Royal Princess, the carpet had a design like a triangle with the point fwd. The only thing was the folks that got turned around never noticed the carpet Duh.

On the June 2-9 Zaandam they had the day of the week inserts in the elevators. Never paid much attention prior to this cruise because we generally take the stairs. Frankly, I'd rather forget what day of the week it is because the cruise ends fast enough!

Well, there are the odd or even cabin numbers on the doors.
(For me, it's hard enough to remember my cabin number, let alone what color carpet goes with it. ;) )

It is on the Princess ships. On the Crown, it was a different striping border on each deck with cabins. I did not notice it on decks that only had public areas.

That idea came over from the old Royal Viking Line---the Prinsendam started there. I loved it when I had it on the Royal Viking Sea. They changed them at midnight on the dot, too! :)
First time I ever saw those carpets on HAL was in July on the Volendam. I still like them, but wish they were changed on time.

Yep, we saw those day of the week rugs inside Prinsendam's elevators recently. Hate to be the guy that has to change them by having to stop the elevator(s) on on each floor of the ship every night;)

and it appears not one of us, some of the most observant people on earth, noticed if the carpets are a different color, even/odd. It's a fabulous idea and wouldn't it something if they were, and no one noticed.

I walk the corridors for exercise as it is easier on the feet and I can tell you that the carpet is the same on both sides of the ship - at least on the Statendam and Veendam.

So Copper, now you speak French, too? :)
You know, if the carpet were different for each side of the ship, then I'd have to remember which color or stripe or pattern went with port or starboard. As it is, all I have to remember is my cabin number. :) (And I learned my numbers a while ago).
Day of the week in the elevator (or anywhere else)? I don't care - I'm on holiday!

If I remember correctly (got lost twice on Zuiderdam last month) the carpets are different colors, but it's fore-and-aft as opposed to port and starboard. I turned the wrong way getting out of an elevator and walked 3/4 of the way around the ship, and am pretty sure the fore- carpets were red and the aft carpets blue.
Or vice versa :D

Good idea , Brian. They could also put pithy sayings on the carpet like, "Tonight is Formal Night, now dress correctly, "dam" it ! "

On HAL, the carpet is the same on both sides of the ship. However, some decks have blue carpet and some have red, in the corridors.
Some ships are much easier to get around than others. QE2 is particularly difficult; there are eight stairways (A through H) and not all go to all the decks!

Good thing you translated. :)
My John calls me his petit fromage (little cheese). Coming from him that's quite a compliment. But that's about the extent of my French.
I told him about this carpet thread & how folks are using the colors/patterns to figure out where they are on the ship. He said just put a picture or other decoration on the cabin door (we put a pic of our dog). I said oh no, I don't want to sent off raging debate! I remember that thread. :)

Ah but it's all in good fun, petite fromage!:) Now trying to find your cabin after multiple Wang Wang's in the Crow's Nest, that's a whole other story, I don't care what color the carpet is ;)

Wang Wang's? What's a Wang Wang? Say Wang Wang really fast 3 times.
Are you trying to flirt with me? I'll have you know I'm a married woman. ;)
You & Lou keep up the good work & stay safe. Got 4 of your "brothers in blue" (actually 3 brothers & 1 sister) in our family so we hear stories, too.

Flirt, moi? - Don't know how to do that (plus I'm happily married too and my lovely wife is Cuban:eek: )
A Wang Wang is a drink that HAL's Filipino bartenders will make to perfection. The ingredients are 1/4 oz of Vodka, White Rum, Gin, Scotch, Bourbon, Tequila, Brandy, Triple Sec topped off with Pineapple and Orange juice and a splash of Grenadine - Very tasty kinda like a Long Island Ice Tea. The only problem is if you have more then one, solid objects will start to move
Thanks and the same to your sister and brothers!

So if I can add correctly  a Wang Wang really only has 2 oz of hooch, but sounds like it packs quite a wallop. I don't think it would take even ONE of those to get me lost. Don't think I'd like to see pix of me the next day.
Hope that some day John & I get to sail w/you & your lovely Cuban wife. :)

There not that bad as long as you don't chug-a-lug them from the straw! Like Clint said: "Man's gotta know his limitations"
That would be fun! I read all about your group escapades on the new Noordam's inaugural. Sounds like you guys had a great time!

Those drinks I was sending to Kory?

How do you think I got him to play all my requests? Buy him a Wang Wang and watch the piano move...

Was that Kory Simon? He's fabulous. We loved to watch him play/sing on the Oosterdam last October. He must have jumped ships, eh? :D He totally ruined any other Piano Bar for us. We were sooooo disappointed with Romeo on the Zaandam last month.
We had different colored carpets in the halls on the Star Princess in 2003. I wished for them aboard the Zaandam as I was hopeless. I never could figure out which way to turn when we got off the elevator or came down the stairs. I always had to look at the sign. My dh and I usually have a running competition on cruises to see who can find his way around first--I LOST.
We DID have the days-of-the-week carpet in the elevators. I enjoyed knowing what day it was so I could worry about who was doing what at home and were the college students actually feeding my little boys or not?

Cousin Brian - You have NO idea how much John & I just laughed at that!!! And he didn't even really know why, because he hadn't been following the thread & didn't know what a Wang Wang really was. Had to go back & review the thread for him.
John did comment that perhaps you should have sent a few Wang Wang's to that obnoxious guy in the Piano Bar, remember him? He took control of Kory's microphone for a bit. Perhaps a Wang Wang or 2 or 3 would have moved him to the floor. Or overboard. ;)

Digital makes it so easy to take pictures of EVERYTHING. I figured my little boys--ages 11, 10, and six--would want to see EVERYTHING so if I thought they'd like it, I took the photo. I would never had done that with film.
