We are leaving to two days and have a very trivial, but important to me, question. We are on the Zaandam September 1 and I wear bermuda shorts a lot. Are there any other men like I that are nuts? This would not be on shore excursions or in Glacier Bay but in the common areas in the daytime. Thanks for your imput

We have seen men wearing bermudas in Alaska on very chilly days!!

On warm days we do indeed wear our bermudas.

LOL
I think it had a lot to do where you are from and what you are used to. We are from Fl and get cold easy. We brought shorts but never wore them and we went in July. We did however see many wearing shorts and it just made me colder.

An earlier poster who had just returned from Alaska on the Zaandam indicated the cover was almost always closed over the lido pool making that area very warm and humid. That being the case, I would think shorts would be very comfortable.

I'm taking two pairs....Zaandam September 15.

Have a great cruise.

Here's a mean temp chart for Alaska:

In the Pacific Northwest (and most Alaska cruises depart from that area), it's very common to wear shorts close to year round, along with sandals. Just add socks if it's cooler. Make them longer shorts and woolly knee-hi socks if it's cold. Depends on what you're used too, and it can get warm around the pool (Zaandam, July 2006)

 How about bikini's for the pool? Do many go swimming in September? Is the pool nice and warm on the ship?

If you got em, wear em. Just don't do so in the dining room. The ladies do not like competition, in the knees.

doctork - don't I wish that we could wear shorts almost all year round but, alas we can't.
Not here, that is for sure, and we are definitely the Pacific Northwest. Our shorts are put away in September/October and don't appear again until April/May. I have never seen a pair of shorts worn during our winters.
Today it is cloudy and showery and 68 degrees - people walking by are huddled in sweaters and jackets. fortunately it will warm up again in time for the week-end.

My DH hasn't worn long pants since his retirement except when we go to dinner or have to get dressed up. He wore shorts on our cruise in Alaska and our cruise to the Baltic. He always gets a few odd looks but he insists. You should see him with the snowblower in the winter with boots and shorts on. ;)

If it is warm enough in the day wear shorts. If not, wear long pants so you don't catch cold. I have worn shorts in Alaska but I usually go in Mid June or early July.
