First a little background.

MY wife and I have cruised on eight previous HAL cruises, three Princesss, three RCCL and one NCL.

We have always been of the opinion that HAL does it best so it is with some sorrow that I write this review.

This cruise was not a total disaster but it also did not live up to our expectations.

We were in The Penthouse Suite, cabin #7001.

We arrived at the pier about 10:00 AM and dropped off our luggage which consisted of 3 suitcases and 7 boxes of medical supplies as my wife has kidney failure and needs to do dialysis using these supplies. We have done this before with no problem except one time when HAL lost the boxes and we had to depart the ship before it sailed. Because of this I am somewhat parinoid when it comes to these boxes. When we could get to deck 7 about 1:00 PM I went to the Concierge, Alma, and explained the situation with the boxes and that we need to have them in our room before sailing or we would have leave the ship. I had kept track where they were in the loading process and told her that I would be glad to show someone where they were so that they didn't get lost in the process of delivering luggage to the rooms. To make a long story short she said that she would handle it but as a result we did not get the boxes until 15 minutes before sailing. When I did this on another cruise line last year they gave the boxes priority status and had them in our stateroom within a half hour. Other than this experience, Alma was very nice and in all other areas very accomodating.

Our stateroom had a heating problem all week and in spite of the thermostats being set at the highest level all week it was usually cold in the cabin unless the sun was hitting it directly. The ships engineer tried to fix it several times and then expressed the opinion that it was within their standards. I finally gave up on getting it fixed.

The food in my opinion was not up to HAL standards but of course this is quite subjective. When eating breakfast in the morning the process was set up so that if you had your eggs cooked order and you had ordered something like hot cakes, ect. then the stuff previously ordered would get cold while you waited for your eggs. As far as the rest of the food, in my opinion the beef was very tough. I also thought that the desserts were not quite as good as on past cruises except for the bread pudding. The ice cream bar on other HAL ships, such as Amsterdam and Veendam was much better with more and better choices of flavors and toppings.

We ate at the Pinnacle one night and found it to be very good.

The ship is in good shape as are all HAL ships but would not rate as my favorite. I think I have come to like the new VISTA ships which again is subjective.

All in all the cruise and the weather was good. This was one of the few times wse have been to Ketchikan that it was sunny.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask as I am not a great writer but much better at answering questions.

I can understand your nervousness with getting the medical supplies so late! I would be too.

Thanks for your review, Cruzbum. With your HAL background, I'd say that you should be more than able to review HAL. Don't know when your last HAL cruise was, but in about the last year, DH & I have also noticed a great decrease in the quality of the food. Also, don't know how you compare HAL's food to the other lines you have cruised. DH & I have decided to stay with HAL because we have heard & experienced (Princess, NCL, Celebrity) that the food is not any better on the other mass market lines. I guess it was nice while it lasted on HAL, & now we are getting what we pay for - however, we go on bargain prices - appears you went deluxe - so you probably didn't get what you paid for!! We like HAL only because it is generally older adults which equates to quieter - not partiers, not lots of kids (we cruise while school is in). However, better food at the same price would cause us to cross over if the atmosphere was OK.

Regarding your VIP boxes, if you cruise HAL again, I would suggest contacing the access & accommodation dept. pre-cruise. Don't know if that is via ship services or not. But my understanding is that there is one assigned person per ship in the Ship Services dept. Hopefully, pre-cruise action will remove the panic for you. That must have been a horrible experience. Bless your wife's heart; hope she stays well enough to keep cruising with you. :D

I do have a question - How would you compare this HAL cruise food to your previous cruises on HAL & the other cruiselines?

This is our fourth shot at the medical supply problem. We have the choice of having the supplies delivered to the ship by the company that provides them or taking the boxes to the ship ourself.

The first time we did it the supplies were delivered to the ship and we had no trouble at all. I just go to the concierge and inform her that there are medical supplies that need to be brought to the room and it happened right away.

The second time we did this the supplies were delivered to the ship but they could not find them so we had to leave the ship just before it sailed. They discovered them when they were two days at sea. This cruise we just took was the replacement cruise for that one.

In all cases I send a letter to Access and Compliance Dept. prior to the cruise informing them of the situation.

The time that we had to leave the ship we could not get another cruise on HAL that year because they were all booked up. We decided to try NCL with some reservation but were able to book a suite.

We decided at this point since we sail only to Alaska and live only 60 miles south of Seattle that we would take the boxes to the ship ourselves. I put a label on all four sides of the boxes giving all info such as name, room#, ship and sail date.

When we arrived at the pier to board the NCL Star we were met by the concierge. She had already been informed by her home office that we were coming and had a special need. The boxes were located immediately and taken to our room. I was very impressed at their concern.

I might say that we enjoyed the Star for the most part. We had a really nice suite with butler and concierge services.

The only dislike we had was the size of the ship and number of passengers. Everything else was very nice. The food was good, depending on what venue we chose.

Sorry for the long winded explanation.

P.S. We are going on the new Norwegian Pearl next July.

Thanks for your report.

I can understand your concern about your wife's medical problem and needing those supplies.

Maybe HAL should take a lesson from NCL!!!!!

Leaving a week from Friday for the Zaandam. I hope they will be good about getting the Enshure that my Mom needs because she has trouble chewing solid food.

Not life threatening as in your case, but I hope they don't mess up on the request.

Hello Cruzbums:

I'm truly sorry to hear about your concerns and difficulties getting your wife's necessary medical supplies onboard. I am also very sorry that we didn't have the opportunity of meeting you while we were cruising together on Zaandam last week. I hope your future travels will be pleasant and carefree.

Best wishes,

Karin

I'm surprised that with supplies of that nature HAL didn't just have a steward come to you with a hand truck and walk them onboard with you. Or, am I being nieve here?

Sounds reasonable to me....they will push your wheelchair, so why not a handtruck, or stacked on a ships wheelchair?
