We will embark the Westerdam on Dec 31, New Years Eve. Does anyone know if the dress code will be casual as it usually is on the first evening? I was hoping that HAL would have special festivities for New Years Eve since this is a special night for us.
Also, will the kids club be open and offer activities? Usually the first night is when you register the kids and the programs start the next day.
I have been on other holiday cruises but can't remember ever embarking on a holiday before. Any info you can give me would be helpful.

Wow, that's a new one! We've been on several HAL New Year's cruises but have always embarked the ship the day(s) before New Year's Eve. HAL makes a big deal out of New Year's Eve with parties, music, dancing, champagne, "oliebollen", you name it. Even though it's embarkation day, my guess is (and it's a guess only) that they will make it an optional formal night in order to still have the special night ambiance. I'm almost 100% sure that even though the 31st falls on embarkation day, HAL will have everything in place to start the celebration that night. You might want to call Ship Services in Seattle to confirm (and ask them the Club HAL question also) . Regardless, have a great cruise. Being on a cruise ship to ring in the New Year is one of the great ways to celebrate the ocassion!
