I read on one of the ports of call posts that there is a strong current and to be careful swimming here? Is this true?

Hi,
Yes, there can be a strong current at the split--depends on the weather and how strong the surf is in other places. I stayed on Caye Caulker a few years ago and the split was mostly swimmable. You won't be out there alone so just watch to see if other people are fighting the current or not. One day there was some sort of marine life in t http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gifhe water there that the locals said would make me itchy if I went in. I don't know how common it is.
I loved Caye Caulker for just hanging out--the people who live there are really friendly and were a lot of fun to talk to. Wouldn't feel bad if I couldn't swim there--I'd walk around and enjoy the birds and hang out somewhere where I could chat up the local people. I think Shirley's Guesthouse still has the hammocks under the palms right on the beach--if you're nice to her she'll let you sway in the breeze in one of them.
