Well, I might catch some flak over this, but having cruised many times before both on DCL and others, we decided the heck with formal night. What would be the worst that could happen, they would send us to the buffet? Okay, what would be the second worse thing that could happen?
We simply dressed very nice with my sons and myself in oxfords with dress pants and no tennis shoes, and my wife wore a very nice dress. Not an ill word was said to us and we were treated very, very well. Maybe it was because we dressed this way every night. All we know is that my family had a very good time and the entire DCL setting is pretty casual. Our next cruise is on the QM2 in a Queens Grill suite and I don't think we will be getting away with this casual lifestyle, but then again.............

FOrmal night is usually the third night and the semi-formal is on Thursday. I wore a shirt, suit jacket, khakis, tie and loafers. I wore resort casual on semi-formal. I saw many tuxedos and business suits.
Women wore evening gowns to pant suits.
Our server told us that he is instructed to serve you regradless of what you wear. On other nights, I saw people in shorts, tees and sneakers and they were served. When I talked to DCL, they said the dress code were "suggestions" and were "recommended."
Hope this helps.
P.S. we had a great time!

On formal nights on DCL, there will be a few tuxedos, suits and evening gowns, but since most people are on vacation, they wear a nice tie and slacks, a skirt and top, casual dress. Lots of little girls wear Princess gowns, too. There will be people in all types of formal attire. Jeans, sport/athletic shorts and swimsuits are not allowed in the dining rooms, but long walking type shorts and neat, clean jeans have worn. It is fun to dress up for formal nights - there are formal pictures, Disney characters, pin trading and a special Cinderella's Ball excitement in the air.
Be sure to bring your pirate outfits, too!
Best Regards,
Julia
