well, Thanks to everyone who responded for my Nautica trip. I have great hotels in both Athens and Istanbul and great guide rec. for Greek Islands and Istanbul. However noticed I didn't have any info on Athens tour guides and would love an experienced guide for 1-2 days. We will be in Athens 5 days including the one on the ship. So....If anyone used a guide, not just a driver, plese pass on that great information.....Thanks so much

We uses Spiro in Athens. He has a web site and was a wonderful guide and driver.

We also used Spiros in Athens for 3 days. He is a wonderful driver and teacher but not a tour guide that can take you into the sites. He has loads of books that you can take for reference with you but he will not accompany you. Also, entrance fees are not included in his fee. He is very well informed and knows the area and history.
I would highly recommend him, however, just be sure you know what you are getting.

We also used Spiros while in Athens for two days. He was wonderful and a real gentleman. Be warned that his Mercedes is the small one and holds three passengers comfortably, but not four. We would definitely use him again when we go to Athens.

We used Spiros also -- however he sent one of his colleagues.
....Here are my comments. The car they use is very small. We were 4 people (average size) and totally uncomfortable.

You will be driven to the site with some interesting commentary -- but you are on your own at the site.

Also- We did not know that Spiros was not our guide until after we got to Athens. The gentleman he sent is charming -- and if you want a charming driver than Spiros will work for you. If you really want someone informative who will be able to walk with you and point out the significance of the major part of ruins -- you need a real guide.

We engaged him for transfer from Athens airport -- he knew we were 4 people -- his car cannot handle luggage for 4 -- He did not advise us of th is and we had to run to curb to get a 2nd taxi.

In Istanbul I used the services of CredoTours -- They were amazing. Their guides are licensed. They are with you every step of the way.
You are taken to the most significant part of each site -- And their van is luxurious. Frankly, it wasn't until I worked with ***** that I realized how far short Spiros services falls. We remember everything we saw in Istanbul and have photos and books we purchased in Athens. It is a pretty expensive 'do it yourself'

After seeing the difference between Spiros and our Istanbul Guide -- I would NOT recommend Spiro again. If you really want to enjoy each site -- I urge you to get a guide who is with you each step of the way.
