Does anyone else enjoy reading or taking with them books on the Titanic and other sea tragedy books? I am just starting The last log of the Titanic. Any suggestions on books on other ships?

Well, how about "The Edmond Fitzgerald". Not on the ocean, but Lake Superior has horrible November storms.

How about "The Ship and The Storm" by Jim Carrier. It's a minute by minute account of the last voyage of the Fantome (Windjammer Flagship). It is very real and holds a special place in my heart since I once worked on that ship and had met some of the crew. Makes you think about hurricane season?!

My husband thinks I'm morbid because I think a cruise ship is the perfect place to read about ship losses but I feel safe and it makes you connect with the ship and the sea. We were on the Norway awhile back and they showed old footage of the Norway when she was an ocean liner and I felt they should have also showed an old Titanic movie.

Oh, for the record I think the "new" Titanic movie is a mockery of history and an insult to all who were aboard the Titanic.

Hoski, I am a huge Titanic buff. Have you joined The Titanic Historical Society or Titanic International? I am a member of both and they are a great source for reading material.

I want to second the recommendation for "The Ship and the Storm". We sailed the Fantame 2 weeks before the beginning of the accounting in the book. Like the earlier post said....we really got to know the crew and mourned their loss.

I have not joined any organizations but would welcome info to find them. Would you believe I skipped the Titanic museum in Halifax? Had a one year old with me and didn't go. Got two more books in the mail today.

I read "The Ship and the Storm" while on the Triumph in March. A very good book. I remember when this happened. We were getting ready for our cruise on the Celebration out of Tampa to the western Caribbean and New Orleans. We encounterd Hurricane Mitch but he was no where near the intensity that caused the Windjammer ship to go down. A really sad story.

A great book to read while on a cruise ...Liners to the Sun. It's a wonderfully well written history of how the Ocean liners turned to tourism.

Ship Disasters, movies; Lots of wonderfully depressing stories of death and tragedy

Abandon Ship!: The Saga of the U.S.S. Indianapolis, the Navy's Greatest Sea Disaster
by Richard F. Newcomb, Peter Maas

Americas worst ship disaster killed more than the Titanic - but few have heard of it
America's worst naval disaster claimed more lives than the sinking of the Titanic. When the huge riverboat Sultana went down in 1865, the death toll was 1,547 even more than the 1,512 lives lost on the Titanic

Worst Single-Ship Disaster During A War
When the German liner Wilhelm Gustloff, weighing 25,484 tonnes (25,893 tons), was torpedoed off Danzig (now known as Gdansk), Poland, by a Soviet S-13 submarine on January 30, 1945, a total of 7,700 people died. The Wilhelm Gustloff was heading West from the port Gotenhafen packed with over 8000 people who were fleeing from the advancing Soviet forces

ok all you wonderful CCers, does anyone remember the name of this movie? It was about the Titanic and the passengers were suppose to have survived and lived in air pockets on the ship at the bottom of the ocean. There was also a group of outsiders that did not live in the group because they were deformed from trying to swim to the surface.

It used to run all the time on one of those odd channels when we didn't have 700 cable channels about 20 years ago.
