View Full Version : Kids taking friends along

Our kids want to take a few friends along on a cruise, they will be in different cabins than us, and one is not 21 years old.
Will we have any problems booking this cruise without his guardian being there?
Or is there a way we can get around this? Don't want him stuck in Florida while we sail off!

You haven't said how old or how many, but just on the surface this is a terrible idea.

Why would you say this is a terrible idea? I don't understand. They are all over 21 except one. And he is not ours. Will we have a problem with Carnival?

My daughter took two friends with her for her 16th birthday and they had their own cabin. We had to book it with one of the adults in each room. We also had a letter from the other parents giving us permission to take them out of the country and to authorize medical attention just in case. Carnival also said they would like a notorized letter giving you permission but they never asked for it.

Ok, I misread the second sentence of your original posting. But you still haven't said how many of them are coming on this junket. Personally, I *still* wouldn't do it. The #last* thing I want to do is go on vacation with my kids and their kids. I go on vacation to get *away* from them.

Like lorideco said, you'll need the parental authorization letter "just in case."

I'd wager that beneath that curmudgeon exterior, that you are a big mush.....I guess I'd call you a 'closet father.'

To actually answer your question, one person in each room must be 21, but if the parents or some facsimilie thereof is in another cabin, they are your responsibility. We had our kids, 18, 19, 20 in another cabin and had no problems, of course they didn't cause any problems. If you can trust them not to cause problems you will be fine.

You will need permission and medical slips for any kid under 18. As long as a parent is going the kids can have their own cabins.

Also- even though they may be older--set rules up before you go, so there isnt any misunderstandings when you get onboard.
Like-- can they do the ports by themselves. Even the kids who are not yours? (they will be your responsiblity) What happens if someone misses the ship??

ok, here is the situation, there will be 5 guys going along with us. Two are our kids, 23 and 21 year olds. In two cabins...1st cabin guys are 21 and 22. 2nd cabin guys are 23,23 and 20.
Do we need permission slip or anything for the 20 year old?
Travel agent wasn't sure what to do, or if he would even be able to go. She was going to check.

You wont need travel information for any of those kids. (only for the kids under 18) They will all need an original birth certificate and a government issued ID. And because you are going I dont see there will be a problem with booking this cruise for those kids. What cruise line are you looking at? and what Itinerary?
Im sure they will all have a blast.

We will be on the Carnival Fantasy, 3 day Bahamas.
I didnt think there would be a problem, but the TA did.

It doesn't really apply here since your extra is 20 but as an FYI for anyone else reading this later IF you are taking someone else's minor child and the parent are divorced you will need separate letters from each parent. They've really been enforcing this (allegedly) lately due to the growing number of child custody issues. This also applies if you're taking your own child and you are divorced.

I dont see how that can be strictly enforced. What about the single parents who dont have any contact with the other parent? I was seperated from the dad for many uears and took my kids cruising. No way would I have asked for a letter from him as that would only made things worse...complicatred even. What he didnt know didnt bother.

I think that will be for people who take other peoples kids onboard..like grandparents/ or friends.

http://landfalltravel.com/minorsx.html

How strictly Carnival tries to enforce this is anyone's guess. I know I've heard of people taking minor children that aren't theirs and they were never even asked to show a letter of permission. I personally wouldn't take the chance if it were me taking the kids (or letting my kids go with another adult). I'd hate to be turned away at the ship! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Now, as far as the original question . . . Carnival's policy states that everyone in the cabin must be 21 or over OR have an adult at least 25 booked in the same cabin. There ARE exceptions, such as parents booked in another cabin, cross-referenced to the "kids" booking number. Carnival seems to give people different answers to this all the time, sometimes even telling people they can't even put their OWN kids in another cabin, which is just plain wrong. We've done it for our last two cruises. The problem sometimes arises when all the kids in a cabin DON'T have a parent along on the cruise. Carnival (OR the TA) sometimes tells them they must book an adult in the cabin with the under-21 person. Carnival doesn't seem to be consistent with this. My SIL had no problem booking her teenage daughter and her two friends in a seperate cabin, so hopefully, you won't have a problem doing this either.

Here's Carnival's complete policy on this:

In case anyone is interested, this is where I got the legal form to take along other peoples kids with us. Fill it out and then it prints it out with the info you checked off. Have the parents sign it and if possible get it notorized to be sure.

https://www.legaldocs.com/docs/child_1.mv

By the way, bringing my kids friends with us actually gives us a nice quiet vacation because they are kept busy and I never see them the entire vacation (except dinner which they must attend so I can see them)
